Another RS250

Thu Aug 23, 2007 2:00 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

I'm considering an RS that has been listed on ebay several times. Its a '91, and I know I should look at a newer one because of parts issues, but I'm considering this one because it looks to be real clean, and because ithe earlier RS more similarities to the NSR vs. a newer RS. I'm probably only going to do a couple track days a years if that so I don't want to get allot of money tied up. As I understand it, the pistons and rings will likely need to be replaced every other day. I hear these are NLA so are there any other options?

James,

here is my take on this.

The RS newer or older is just like the NSR. It's a V-Twin 2 stroke. Has power valves, inline intake, water cooled, etc.

The rest of the differences don't matter and won't make a difference in your ability to work on the bike. it's all the same in theory which is what is important.

As for the older bike on eBay. I am sure that bike would be a kick in the pants fun. However I would ask myself what are my goals of a track day. Have fun and ride a 2-stroke? or to have fun, ride a 2-stroke and learn skills on a bike that is a little more up-to-date.

Suspension, Chassis, brakes, tires have come a long way since 1991, and you will find that with a newer RS. As you have already mentioned, the parts are also easier to come by if you by an NX5 or NXA model. All depends on what you want.

i will say the 91 is a good looking RS with exception of the girlie paint color Wink

The color actually matches my truck.

My thinking on the similarities with the NSR that I could put a NSR motor in the RS (or the RS motor in a NSR), which is something I can't do with the later RSs.

Your right about the newer RS being more technically advanced. I have always said that I'm more interested in good handling than I am in power.

The truth is I don't have much time for anything so maybe I'll let it pass.
