RS TO NSR FLANGES

Thu Jan 03, 2008 11:37 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi there .
I have a question as a noob to this forum.
I have a 1989 rs 250 exhaust sysytem which has a three bolt fitting for the manifolds and am wanting to know if anybody has made an adapter plate or custom manifolds so they can be fitted to my mc18.If so where did you get them made and how much?
I have done the relevent searches on the forum history but nothing really answers my question.

hmmmm i would but upon reading the "old threads" this really opens up so many other issues like reliablity and rebuilds every 300mls.this does not really appeal to me.
i dont mind playing with jetting and carburation in fitting the rs pipes just want to have some way of connecting the pipe to the engine.i have an old set of standard pipes ill just cut the flange off and make an fitting kit if no one knows of a ready made kit.

You'll probably find Jha, Dogfight, or TYGA stubs will do the job. What's the I.D. of the downpipe that slots over the flange?

TYGA manifold stubs are 45mm. You can buy them direct from TYGA.

ok I've got the pipes fitted, with a little bit of fiddling. Now heres the crunch question, having never really heard an rs250 in the flesh running. How loud are they? as the pipes ive just fitted are loud and raw sounding, will probably sound spot-on when they come on song but compared to standard is there much of a difference or do the silencers need re-packing.
thanks

Anything compared to standard is going to be loud.

What have you done to the motor, and what year are the pipes? I don't expect them to work very well on an NSR. That too, and jetting, could cause them to sound rough.

they dont sound rough, in fact it revs fairly crisp and cleanly and i know there will be some jetting issues, it was just the volume difference i was questioning.
by the way its an mc18 early type with the silencers down by the swingarm.recent top end refresh with new pistons and re-plate.the rs pipes are off a 1989 rs 250 (staggered side by side type).

Definitely going to be significantly louder than stock pipes.

You'll probably find the RS pipes will make the motor peaky. The loss of midrange will not really be compensated for by the top end improvement and the pipes are tuned to peak over 12,000rpm, whereas the NSR exhaust port isn't, so there will be a mismatch.

One thing you could try is to make longer exhaust stubs at the exhaust port exit. This lengthens the pipe, so brings it's tuned length closer to the range you need for a stock engine.

And yes, they are loud.

yes i may have accidenally extended the stub length when i made the flanges so might be somewhere near!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and as for the noise the neighbours will have to get used to it Twisted Evil
so just a little bit more fairing mods to do then it should be ready for its first test ride.
