New to site....

Hi guys,

I've been looking at this site for a while now. I have an NS400, which I am rebuilding, but it's not really a long term proposition as a road bike (spares etc). I now want to take the plunge and get an NSR, which I've always liked. Although I really like the stock bikes, I want to do the whole Tyga bodywork/pipes, RS forks, authentic GP250 race paint-job type thing, and aiming for about 65hp for a road bike.

My question is - what is the best starting point? I like the idea of a dry clutch, but NSR's are a bit unusual here in Aus, and the R models are a bit easier to find. Does it make much difference as a starting point, or is it worth holding out for an SE/SP model? I'm mainly concerned with engine differences (easier mods/power gains/HRC part suitability), as I plan on changing most of the suspension components anyway.

Keen to hear your thoughts?

Thanks

Scott

Howdy and welcome,

What part of NSW are you in? The NSR is surprisingly quite easy to get access to for parts and what not, but finding one at a good price with minimal work is hard Evil or Very Mad

Dry clutch for the road, IMHO, is more for poser value, I am a dry clutch fan though Rolling Eyes

It depends on how you feel about adjustable suspension (SE/SP), or if you are happy to get the R and get all the good suspension bits yourself (VFR400 front end, better rear shock). You know the differences between the R,SE,SP right?

if **** not up to date with the specs they can be found in these links
http://nsr-world.com/specs/html/nsr250/index.htm
http://www.dreamgate.ne.jp/nsr/general/quickref.html
http://tyga-performance.com/site/index.php?cPath=369_378

if you can wait, hold out for an SE / SP 21 their cheaper to modify than the 28s as you dont require the 030 card, and imo look better with the banana swingarm ( i used to have a 28 )

and you get the good bits of the adjustable suspension, i remember reading a thread where someone updated to rvf400 usds, but didnt like them and reverted back to the SE/SP forks after getting them rebuilt

the magteks on the SP and the dry clutch on the SE/SP, why would you want to go wet again...

im getting my bike hopefully soon, i found a 21sp in rothmans colours in melbourne getting it delivered this week

theres 1 on ebay, i think its just an R model in melbourne it does have a fresh rebuild, cant remember if it was just a top end though

happy hunting!

Thanks for the replies.

I am currently living out in western NSW, but planning on moving to Vic later in the year.

An MC21 would be the preferred option as it is much easier to derestrict - no messing about with PGM cards. I am aware of the differences between the models (adjustable suspension, magteks etc), but noticed some comments regarding HRC gearbox parts being suitable for SP engines only. That is the basis for my query.

I had planned on replacing the front end (NC35 or preferably RS250), and getting an aftermarket rear shock. I have also found a number of dealers in Aus that can supply parts - so no problems there (except crank bearings eh?).

After my experience with the NS400, I would be looking at having a complete spare engine as well as building up a stock of numerous other spares, to keep the bike as a viable long term option as a road bike.

well, it will be more expensive to crash a MC28 and ding that swingarm. You can also fit a PGMIII and associated kit to a MC28, but then you're losing half the appeal if you do that.

I think the answer to the question is that both will be a reasonable starting point as long as you get it for a good price Cool

When you make it to Vic and you are in Melbourne, send me a PM, happy to catch up and chew the fat about NSRs.
