Dry Cutch Dripping Oil

Thu Jul 31, 2008 4:31 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi All,

I have found that after riding my MC21, the clutch starts slipping abit, nothing extreme but it only does this when the bike has been going for a quite awhile and is hot. I noticed today that there was traces of oil on the clutch, do I need to rebuild the clutch or do you think if something to do with a seal or something, sorry I knowledge of bikes is limited.

There's a big (about 87mm off the top of my head) oil seal behind the clutch assembly. Sounds like it needs replacing.

You will need to take the clutch off, drain the coolant and transmission oil, and remove the engine casing as the seal is pressed in from behind.

It may sound intimidating, but it's a very simple job, and even first time round shouldn't take you any more than an hour or so, provided you have a clutch removal tool. If you don't, you will probably find that your local bike shop will remove (and re-torque) the clutch centre nut for you for a minimal fee.

Sounds like the seal is just on the way out, as it's not until the oil is hot (i.e. at its' thinnest) that it appears to be leaking. Unfortunately though, oil on the plates will destory them extremely quickly, so it must be repaired immediately, else you can add another $100 for clutch plates to the repair cost.
