Problem with regulator/rectifier

Fri Aug 15, 2008 9:27 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi
I'm new to the forum, but I wondered if any members have an problem-solving knowledge when it comes to regulator/rectifiers?
I've got a 1991 MC21 and I had a minor low-speed crash last Autumn, which ended with my NSR on its left side. Damage seemed mainly superficial but I've decided to put a new Tyga race faring on and do a general overhaul.
The clocks were smashed in the crash (probably not relevant to problem, but someone may disagree). I've started putting the faring together, and have put the new sub-frame on the back. However, the regulator/rectifier burnt out after the engine had run for about 10 minutes. I bought a new one, and also put a new battery on, and the same thing happened again. I can't find any wires dangling or shorting, and can only imagine its the alternator.

Does anyone have any suggestions or advice?

Thanks

Dave

The rectifier needs a good heat sink. Try making a plate up and welding bolting it to your subframe, then mating the reg/rec to that so that their is good contact between it and your new heatsink.
