Nicasil plating a XR400 cylinder ? Warning DIESEL question

Sun Sep 07, 2008 7:10 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

I'm thinkink of buuying a XR400R but the cylinders just have a sleeve and are not plated.
Is it possible to nicasil plate a XR400 cylinder ?

And is it worth it ?

I would like to be able to keep getting them plated, instead of having to buy new once, when they have been bored to their limits.

I also consider it and advantage, that i can have just one size piston and rings as spares.

As its a diesel, maybe they need rebore so seldom, that it would be silly to use money for plating ?

I would be suprised if they arent nikasil plated but I'm even more suprised that Andy hasnt jumped on your balls for posting a question about 4 strokes Laughing !
The xr's are in a fairly low state of tune and are renowned for their reliability so I doubt bore wear will be a big problem. Also their are a lot of big bore options available for these bikes if you do wear out your barrel.

Well it is a Honda, and where else should one ask for nicasil expertise, than in a two-stroke forum Wink

If you ask in a diesel forum, they'll only tell you about oversize rebores and insertion of new sleeves etc. they are not on the same level of development as our two-strokes.

Exactly Fenton.

Sorry Poul, that's what the Members Area Open Discussion is for, and part of the reason for creating it. It means the free area is kept even more strictly on topic, and this was explained when it first launched.
