Coil Check

Sun Nov 21, 2004 10:29 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

MC-21 R.....Located in Missouri, so no chance of any outside help here....But, ex wife rode the machine about 2 years ago, she said it backfired loudly a few times then stopped running, it's been in my shop since......Any way to check the coils? If so, what are the readings supposed to be? Any other suggestions? It's been years since I've wrenched on this machine so any help would be appreciated

Right. Before you do anything, check the power valve motor moves freely. Do it with you hands, as if it's siezed, you will toast the ignition unit - and they're rare and bloody expensive. In fact, you could do worse than disconnect it befor you start poking about.

Really, you have to start with draining the carbs off, fresh fuel etc and take it from there.

What have you tried?

So far, draining fuel off, checking various connections (undid the wire splice and replaced back to stock) and kicked the pee out of it without luck, there seems to be mild voltage coming from the spark plug leads. Thanks for the quick response..........i'm watching closely here

"Mild voltage?"

What exactly do you mean - is there a weak spark there?

The spark often "looks" unusual when the plug is just resting on the cylinder head, but the conditions within a running cylinder are drastically different, and the plug may behave very differently.

If you have fuel, compression, and a spark, the motor should run! :)

Have you checked the compression? The NSR can be very hard to start if the compression is low. Also, make sure the battery is 100%. A battery not in tip-top condition and fully charged can cause all manner of problems.

If the motor's been standing so long that little spiders have taken residence in the expansion chambers, try helping things along with a little squirt on carb cleaner down the inlets and a bump start!

Andy.
