I have a problem with my NSR, it can sometimes take a good five minutes to start up, battery and spark is new and in working order.
I went out this morning and got half way to work and the bike cuts out just like ive run out of petrol but it hasn't, except this time it does not start!!!!,
this has happened before and mechanic could not find the problem, but it solved itself and has worked for a few weeks.
Anyone else had this issue and got any ideas or solutions?
A basic 2-stroke is an extremely simple design, and despite it looking otherwise when you take the fuel tank off, the NSR is no different really.
Make sure you have the 3 key elements... compression, fuel, and spark before doing anything else.
Open the float drain screws and see if fuel comes out the drain tubes to check the filter in the tank is at least clear enough to let the float bowls fill.
Inspect the spark plugs. If they are dry and a light grey colour with silver deposits on them/one of them, drop the exhaust pipes off and have a look up the ports at the pistons, as it's probably seized! If the plugs are wet and black (hopefully!), then dry them out and clean them!
Check you actually have a spark still! May sound stupid, but if it magically cured itself last time, I would suspect a bad electrical connection/fractured wire somewhere. Possibly the pulser coils.
Check the compression! I say this last as like most of us, you probably don't have your own compression tester. 2-stroke compression is pretty low anyway, so any drop is bad news!
Battery condition, as you already mentioned, should be 100% too, and check you have a full radiator. If the level is low, check a head gasket isn't blown.
When you are convinced all of the above are A-OK, then a little WD40 down the carb throats and a bump start is a crude test. If it fires and runs briefly, but won't run on fuel from the tank, you need to check the fuel flow and, more importantly, check for air leaks as it's quite possible it's drawing a large amount of air in through a crank seal or split inlet manifold. _________________ Andy.
