mc 18 trouble

Mon May 18, 2009 9:35 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

I have just bought a NSR mc18 no logbook or plate so not sure which one. Bike is in pieces, many parts missing. I have just bolted the engine back in and cleaned the carbs checked bike for spark and it has spark and it has compression but it wont start. I have no clocks, rad, power valves not hooked up, no fuel pump (not sure whether they have one???).

Hello and welcome,.

Firstly try a little punctuation and grammar (like it is now).
Secondly, indeed there is no fuel pump on the NSR250.

I presume you're kicking it over on the kickstart? You're asking a lot for it to go if it's not run for a long time and has just been chucked back togeather. You might have more luck if you try bumping starting it, preferably down a slight hill so you can let it turn over few times. You'll also be able to feel if it's trying to fire at all.

Not that any of this is a good idea, you should really put it togeather properly first.

Don't forget to put some decent 2 stroke oil in the autolube system and bleed it through if it's been left dry. Or just put some in the petrol at a ratio of 30/1.

You might want to try check the battery too, they start a lot easier on a good one.

Hi,and welcome .You should be able to identify your MC18 model from the frame number, check the Parts Manual link.Using the Search facility can answer a lot,and a study of the Workshop won't go amiss.By the way where in Cork are you?I may not be too far away Wink

hi thanks for the response, but i have a new battery fitted and have also tried a bump start. The bike nearly started i think but that may have been my imagination. This bike has not been run for at least 10 years judging by the amount of dirt in the carbs. The autolube system has been removed from my bike. So i was just using premix with f/ synthetic rock oil. I am going to do a compression test on it tonight, what sort of figures should i be getting???
