Not so dry clutch.

Tue May 05, 2009 8:58 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

I have oil emrging from the splined shaft emerging from the gearbox.
Its only minimal and more of an irritation than anything.

If I go on a long enthusiastic ride I get a film on the outer 3 plates as well as blowing onto the camber and lower fairing.

I would guess I would lose a thimble full in around 500 miles.

Is it an inernal seal?

I have replaced all other seals and O ring.

I have a clear photo of the problem and have tried to post it here but failed miserably. A step by step guide to post it would be useful.

I have a ride in the Thundersprint Cavalcade next weekend and want it to look its best.

Thanks..Mal.

It's quite easy to replace.

You have to remove the clutch pressure plate (the 6 springs). Then undo the clutch center nut. You'll need a clutch holding tool to do this or a good zippy gun.

Once the nut and washer are off the center of the clutch can be pulled out complete with all the plate.

Under this there is a further 6 M7 bolts that hold the clutch basket onto the driven gear. Undo these and pull the basket off.

You can then see the seal. Sometimes if the seal isnt too tight it can be removed without going any further as its only pressed into the cover. If however its tight you will need to remove the right hand side engine cover.

Try and do it sooner rather than later. Any leak will most likely only get worse, and oil will ruin the fiber plates. If the clutch starts slipping, it`ll then ruin the steel plates, and replacing the whole assy can get expensive for the sake of a $10 seal.

Will do.

I have examined it closely and I know it can be hard to see due to the moving parts but it does appear that oil is actuallt emerging between the teeth of the splined shaft and the outer steel sleeve which sits in the seal.
Seems ok around the seal.

Is this possible?

Yes, it is possible. There is a smaller oil seal on the shaft, and an O-ring.

Thanks everyone for the help.

Had to take the gearbox cover off but found the O ring on the primary gear shaft snapped!

My fault as I never actually checked it when last reasembled it.

Oil was seeping out along the splines as I suspected.

Cheers.
