Went out for a ride with a mate today and about halfway Vanessa(the NSR) started coughing and spluttering at about 7K RPM.
This continued on for the rest of the ride.
Now in first, I could muscle her through to 8K and powerband worked fine all the way to 12.5k. In the other gears she couldn't get through the dead spot but if I took her to 7K and then dropped a gear so she was above 8K powerband was there in 2nd 3rd and 4th (higher gears weren't tested).

Cleaned the air filters and did the wiresplice last night. Took her for a run last night, no problems. Riding for the first half of today - no problems.
Where is the best place to start looking?
Also, if all else fails, who is the best 2 Stroke Mech in Sydney? I'm based in Parra, but I have a Van so I can load Vanessa up and take her anywhere.
I don't know what could be wrong with your bike, but I can recommend Mick Cook at Castle Hill Motorcycles as a good mechanic. I have seen him work on NSR's before, he has rebuilt my NS400R, and he owns a couple of NS400R's himself (ie he knows about and appreciates two strokes). Just up the Windsor Road. Check the website.
