Help determine which model MC-28

Tue May 26, 2009 9:42 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

I have an 1996 MC-28 which I believed was a "R" model until recently tinkering with it. The plastics says 250R but I know how easily that could have been changed (the bike has hit the pavement a time or two Confused ). I know nothing this bikes history.
What makes me wonder is that it's a dry clutch and has the rear suspension with remote compression and rebound adjustment. I read where people have changed clutches but not the rear suspension.

How can I know for sure what model I have?

You can't know "for sure", about the best you can do is find the model code sticker on the rear subframe (or on the rear fender under the registration plate), it'll say one of the following.

NSR250RR means its an R (well, it's subframe/rear fender is anyway)

NSR250R2R means it's a red/white or blue/white SE

NSR250R3R means it's a Rothmans SP

NSR250R3S means it's an HRC colours SP

NSR250R2T means it's a dayglow colours SE

NSR250R3T means it's a Repsol SP

R model '28's are quite rare, they were only made in 1994 and 1995, in 1996 they made SE's and did the final SP run, from then onwards they only made SE's.

I checked the subframe the best I could and the only stickers I could find were in Japanese and nothing as you describe above. If you (or anyone) had a more specific location or photo of what I'm looking for maybe I might get lucky.
I guess I was mistaken in thinking that the R was the more common model and the SE's and SP's were the more advanced models.
The bike shows 96 on all the paperwork but that could easily have changed over the course of being imported and re-titled a few times.
Thanks for your info,
Dan

Providing I did this right, here are photo's of the bike. If the link takes you nowhere it's because I don't have the computer smarts of my 12 year old son.
How about those brakes? Strictly aftermarket or were Brembo's ever used on factory bikes?

Excuse all the dirt. The bike is a little rough but I just came in from a ride where I got caught in the rain.

Fontyyy,
Outstanding help!
Very hard to see in there but it's pretty clearly NRS250R3R (last R is in a circle). Obviously the plastic has been changed.
Thanks for your help and photo!

Andy,
I take it you're being sarcastic. Like I said, it's a little rough but the price was very right. It will give me something to wrench on over the winter and drive fast through the summer.

Thanks,
Dan

Gold front disc centres were only used on SE and SP models, also front suspension looks like SE spec.

If its the right money then like you said who cares about the condition, I would love to know the thinking behind those cans though!

I reckon they were put on in some sort of attempt to stop the rider/pillion/rear of bike covered in 2 stroke oil.

Dan,

Before you actually ride the bike, I would check out those front brake calipers. Not sure the purpose of the bracket that attaches them to the forks, but what ever the reason they are there, they are not meant for that bike/caliper/disc combo. You can see from the pic that the caliper doesn't align properly with the disc.

Beyond that, the body work seems to be a 1996 SE (NSR250R2T), which matches the dry clutch and suspension parts you mentioned.

I appreciate the help offered. And I'll take my lumps on the rest.
As for the cans, who knows? Again, they were there when I bought the bike. I can't control what the previous owner(s) may have done. I'm just looking to put it in good order to enjoy it. With the high price that I didn't pay I can repair/replace the issues that come with this bike.

Thanks,
Dan
