Possible reg/rec failure ?

Fri Sep 11, 2009 11:45 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Ive done a quick search, and while i can find plently of posts about how to fix a possible fried R/R, symptoms are harder to find.

So i have 2 questions
If a R/R has fried, do you loose all power to the bike. No dash, no lights no nothing
If a battery has failed, does the bike still run, or does it loose everything as well ?
My bike was running fine, then coughed once or twice over about 200mt, then just dropped out completly.

If i disconnect the R/R, can i test it with a multimeter ?

Finally got around to working on the bike.

Pulled the cowl off, charged the battery. Put it back in, and all is fine !!!
WTF !!!
So Im now thinking that perhaps there is a problem connection with either the ignition switch, or the run switch. I have not been able to test the running voltage from the reg as i decided to pull the lower fairing and both chambers and had an inspection of everything while the battery was charging
Checked power valves ect. Noticed that top cly was a bit wetter than the lower. Hoan pattern still looked mint. I did start it. 2nd kick with no chambers on. Only run it for a couple seconds due to noise.

So has anyone experienced dodgy switches before ? Is there a general area that people have seen them become unreliable ?
