Nikasil Plating help needed

Sat Feb 06, 2010 5:33 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Since there is no one in my country that could do a proper plating job,
my only other option is to send my barrels overseas. Could someone
please help me out with a proper place to plate and maybe port my
MC21 barrels for me?

Somewhere in England would suite me best because of shipping contacts.

Regards

Harold

Nikasil plating seems to be a real gamble. I've heard good and bad reports about Langcourt and Aptec ( www.poetonaptec.co.uk ) another UK company.

I've had plating done by Langcourt (although through a 3rd party) and it wasn't very well finished. The plating was flaking off round the ports.

Then again on the flip side, I've spoken with a few people who've had nothing but good experience with Langcourt.

My worry for you is that shipping from and to S.A would be expensive and if it does go wrong you'd have all the expence again in returning the barrel to them to sort out.

One option could be to send the barrel to Ian Emberton (www.iane.co.uk) Whilst he doesn't do the plating, he does personally finish off the ports etc so will check for a good job. I'm not sure of price, but it was around the £150 mark a few years back. Ian is well respected here in the UK on all things RS250. I know a few NSR-World members have used his services over the years, including me and he's been nothing short of a diamond.

Hopefully some of the other UK NSR crew will chime in and give their opinion???

Hi Mate
If your a bit worried about the quality of cylinder replating in U.K send it to electrosil here in australia web page http://www.electrosil.com.au/news1.htm i have used them and there finish is gr8 can not be faulted. They would be one of the best in the world .
Dont know what the shipping difference would be compared to U.K .

Howzit Harold ,

I have sent 2 barrells to NSC , i will let you know if they have sorted out their issues ! I am a bit nervous to be honest . I sent strict instuctions with them , if they adhere to them is another story .

Try having your barrels ported by Dr Neels van Niekerk , any 2t bike that is quick in Sa has been worked on by him .

Thanks for all the replies

Anybody heard of Motrac Racing in the UK,their rates seem quite fair

I visited Eric Gorr,s site in USA,he seems like a 2 stroke fundi, the only problem is I will have to stage a bank robbery to afford his rates

Keep the NSR,s rolling

Hi Neal

I have tried NSC electroplating previously with disastrous effect, the one barrel was slightly oval and the piston to barrel tolerance was exessive.
The firm changed ownership a while back and definetely not reputable at this stage

Good luck with your querries after completion,I will be more than nervous

Any contact details on Dr.Neels

I've used Lancourt four times (yes, I am that crap at jetting) and have had three great and one average jobs done. Never returned a barrel, just wasn't completely impressed with one of the jobs they did...

The two most recent (one last year) have both been great.

Send along the piston you want the barrel matched to, and leave the rest to them.

I had similar once, cost me a championship! When they remove the old plating they use an acid strip, each time the process is done it 'eats' the barrel a little bit more. I had some rgv barrels done and they came back like swiss cheese and held water just as well! Had to send the barrel back and get it skimmed, missed the race meeting and the chance of the championship. Bugger!
