I'm going to guess the fuel difference is just a setup thing, if you run a modded box (or no lid, or pod filters ) the jetting is going to have to be soo much on the safe side, flat out the bike just wants more air, if it can get it, it's going to take it and the fuel as well.

Economy and power are not good friends, look at the MotoGP, they're struggling to do 80 miles with 22 litres of fuel, that's about 17 mpg which is absolutely appalling for a 1 litre 4 stroke bike, the current crop of in-line bore superduperbikes will do over double that, the teams are paying a heavy price for squeezing that last 70bhp(!!) out of the engine.
