I used Silkolene in my 125s as a nipper, as it was easy to get, and I think still is.

Castrol always smelt better, and we were using Castrol in the cars at the time (9000rpm all-steel X-flows), so those two reasons alone were enough to get me using it.

Rock Oil, when I switched, had a superb representative in the South West, with fantastic product knowledge, great prices, and backup. It was a no brainer to try it, and have never looked back.

As you say, the composition of any modern oil these days is going to be far superior to that of the late 80s and early 90s. I would hazard a guess that even a modern semi-synthetic is just as good as any synthetic oil from 20~25 years ago, although I would only ever actually recommend a fully synthetic.
