I was wondering which kind of gearbox oil to use for my MC28SP.
I am reading different kind of numbers.
Do I need 10W30 or 75W90?
The workshop manual says 20W50...
I have had no experience with either Shell or Rock oil, I tend to stick with what has proved to be good quality even if a bit expensive, as I said I have used Castrol for a very long time in both my Honda bikes and BMW cars with no problems.
"You pays your money and takes your choice" I am sure all oils today are up to the job.
We run everything on Rock Oil, including the GP bikes. We use Rock Oil products in the forks, transmission, cooling system, and for engine lubrication.
Castrol has always been my preferred alternative choice, but I've not used it [regularly] for 20 years, since I started with Rock Oil. _________________ Andy.

I think it is a view both based on experience, I used Filtrate many years ago and even tried Duckhams on a recommendation and that cost me a set of clutch plates.
Most oils today are of a far better specification than even ten years ago, the preferred option here by the racers is Silkolene.
I had a lot of experience of synthetic oils when I worked on gas turbines, that was Aeroshell 500 so Shell products are as good as anybody's but I choose Castrol, I tend to stick with what I have had good service with.
For the techies the best way would be to check the specifications of all the different makes, I'll leave that to someone else I think.
I used Silkolene in my 125s as a nipper, as it was easy to get, and I think still is.
Castrol always smelt better, and we were using Castrol in the cars at the time (9000rpm all-steel X-flows), so those two reasons alone were enough to get me using it.
Rock Oil, when I switched, had a superb representative in the South West, with fantastic product knowledge, great prices, and backup. It was a no brainer to try it, and have never looked back.
As you say, the composition of any modern oil these days is going to be far superior to that of the late 80s and early 90s. I would hazard a guess that even a modern semi-synthetic is just as good as any synthetic oil from 20~25 years ago, although I would only ever actually recommend a fully synthetic. _________________ Andy.

ive always used castrol in the race and road bikes a mate has always used rock oil in his kx race bikes with no issues either _________________ ive seen more tarts than mr kipling
