Hi guys,
I have relocated to muscat, Oman and found a 1990 mc21 SP in cabin racing colors for sale in Dubai.
I emailed the guy and he says he bought it from johnnyMac and motor was rebuild by gt engineering in the UK. He said the only thing wrong with the bike is it needs new fork seals (nc30) and a PGM. My questions are: what causes the PGM to go? Is it a simple task of buying a new one fitting it and that's it? And does Mr JohnnyMac remember this bike?
He seems like a genuinely honest person and if you are reading this I do apologize if I'm offending you but I have been stung before and I just want to be sure that it won't happen again.
Thanks for the pm, unfortunately I can't respond because it seems like I don't have the minimum posts of 10 required to do so. As soon as I can I will pm you and keep you updated.

Thanks for that Andy. This is what he said to me...
"It has new tyres (installed back in 2013 but rarely used the bike since), brand new clutch plates and springs, rebuilt carbs with OEM gaskets, rebuilt top end with OEM parts as well as replated cylinders at GT Engineering in the UK"
So it was my bad for saying that the motor was rebuilt! _________________ 1992 Kawasaki zxr750rr

No problem, Jono. I just wanted to clarify it, because we do get complete motors shipped in from around the world for tuning/rebuilding. In fact, we have two more crated to send back to the USA right now! _________________ Andy.

Thanks for the clarification Andy and it's good to know that you guys are capable of doing this for future reference, my only concern is buying a bike that I can't fire up. I need to hear the motor running before handing over the cash. I wish there was someone close by that I could just borrow a PGM from for a day just to make sure the bike is running ok.
Why does it have to be so complicated... Ahhh the story of my life😢 _________________ 1992 Kawasaki zxr750rr

It's "usually" only the RC Valve side of the PGM that fries, so bikes will often still start.
Do you get no spark at all? If you get a spark, manually ensure the RC Valves are set to fully closed, and try starting it. _________________ Andy.

When I asked why he thinks it needs a new PGM this is what he sent me.
"I was riding it and it just died, no spark. I took it to a mechanic in dubai who had an NSR in his workshop and we swapped the pgm...as soon as I had the other pgm on it started up straight away."
Unfortunately I'm not mechanically minded at all and would not have a clue where to begin with what you suggested Andy. But I was thinking of suggesting that he buy a used PGM and if the bike is good I will pay whatever the PGM cost over and above the asking price. In my mind that's fair... If you have nothing to hide. Or am I wrong in thinking like that? _________________ 1992 Kawasaki zxr750rr

Please keep in mind that new and used nsr parts aren't always easily obtainable especially if you live in the middle east or gulf states. I was looking for ages for a pgm III and then opted to have mine repaired by a guy in Greece and my rc valves worked fine. I then bought one from Japan and that has never been used and sits as a spare.
It depends on what is faulty with the pgm?
I have seen a few for sale so you shouldn't have to worry about sourcing one.
