my bike is not on the road as yet. i bought it today for pretty cheap and am trying to get it back in shape atm.
it starts...which is a very good....
but i notice that the temp gauge rises as i try to start it up and by the time it is started for a few seconds it is at the end/max temp. so basically it says the temp is max in a matter of 10 seconds..
Nope, something there is buggered, and it sounds electrical.
Unplug the wire from the sensor - it's on the left hand side, on the bulge containing the thermostat. Let us know what this does... _________________ MC21SP Plaything

Yeah, that was my first thought, maybe something simple like no coolant. Assuming there is coolant, you might try after starting it up feeling the radiator hoses over on the left side of the bike. I once had similar quick overheating symptoms that turned out to be due to a grenaded impeller, causing no circulation of coolant. i recall one (can't remember now which) of the hoses stayed cold as a result. Just a thought. But given that you just got it, maybe you'll get lucky and it will just need coolant. Good luck. _________________ -Jim

if there is no coolant then i would have thought it wouldnt have got a reading coz the sensor is at the top of the coolant line not on the engine so it wont heat up for ages. may be mistaken but that makes sense to me. _________________ 94 mc28 SE
there is still plenty of coolant in the bike.im with fstnsr.
cos this mornin i turned the ignition on and didnt even kick start it yet and it was on max temp. (the bike has been sittin over night in freezing melbourne 4degree weather. )
so im guessing its electrical.
anyway i can chek whats happenin? blown fuse? i chekced all the under seat ones...where are the other fuse boxes somewhere?
dave ett- is the round thing in front of the radiator the thermostat? i couldnt find a wire that i could just disconnect.im not suppose to cut it am i to open the circuit?
the round thing in front of the radiator is probably the hooter. the thermostat is behind the radiator and has coolant pipes running into it. it has a single wire conector protruding from it. _________________ 94 mc28 SE
i'll c what it does...
i
also have another thing to ask.
there is a oil leak. the oil comes out when i try start it.
i am planning to do a full top end rebuild soon and hopefully that will take care of that.
are there any other major palces taht i should be looking at for leaks?
i have a cbr250rr and i had that battery in the nsr. it is bigger but i think they are both 12 volts right?
anyway...i have a nsr size battery now...and i put it in..the temp gauge is back to normal..i tried to start the bike around 15 times say....and the temp was up to max by the time i got it started...is this ok? does it get that hot from kick starting so much?
no it wont. they take a bit of time running to warm up. there is something electrically wrong witht the guage. when the temp is maxed out see if u can touch one of the cylenders, im guessing u will be a ble to and it will be cold. u need to check elecs coz thats whats wrong. _________________ 94 mc28 SE
it sounds like you have a short to earth on the temp sender wire. try pulling the wiring loom around a bit when the temp guage is reading max. if the needle drops back to rest you will have to pull the loom out to see where it rubbed through. as dave has already said, disconnect the sender and try that first.
