I'm new to the forums and quite new to nsr250's as well.
I just picked up an 89' NSR250 MC18 here in Melbourne that was a neglected 80% Completed project bike (The owner had purchased a new cbr600rr and had no time for it anymore) The Engine was rebuilt 1500kms ago, and in good condition, it has done 25,000kms. No electrics were connected as the bikes battery wasn't working (no use for 5 months), but I was assured that it was in excellent working order before it was neglected. The bike is straight and hasn't been dropped to the point of any major damage, the previous owner had dropped it but there was only some slight scratching on the left hand exhust can. The fairings on the other hand, had been resprayed in a charcol grey as he couldn't stand the red white and green original paint scheme !!!
It has what seemed to be fairly new rear tyre (gp70) but the front will need to be changed for roadworthy. The guy was straight up and very honest with me, he said ihe was quoted $700-$1000 to get it roadworthy (front tyre, possible front discs, small things), Other than this I picked the bike up for $1600 (he paid $3000 for it 9 months earlier but had quite a large loan bill for his new bike and needed to get rid of it quickly) I plan to get the engine checked over professionally, and either get some new fairings (I know they are quite rare) as there was a crack under/behind the seat and he has tried a homejob repair that has come up abit messy (spray can). so possibly get them repaired or give it a go myself as I do want to have a go at it. But for the mean time I am taking it up back up to my folks place in the country(As I don't have a garage down here in Melbourne), and starting major work on it after christmas.
I will try to get some photos up soon so you guys can tell me what I have gotten myself into!
Yeah, welcome to the site, and it sounds like you have a decent project there.
Have you considered after market plastics? www.tygaperformance.com do some amazing stuff for the NSR.

Sigh. Must you continue to show you lack of confidence in your model? Everyone knows the MC21SP is the best NSR ever built! _________________ MC21SP Plaything

Common is usually a sign of a good product - bought widely. Underpowered is a matter of finance! _________________ MC21SP Plaything

Yeah common, oh look at meee with my 21sp... oh hang on, everyone else here has one too lol
lol and I think it was 6400 MC21SP's made, thats not Sports Production, thats Mass Production! _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...
Actually (pedant mode... on) there's more owners of the other bikes than the 21SP - if you check the responses in the 'which do you own' thread. So Ner. (Pedant mode... Off) _________________ MC21SP Plaything

Secondly.... I have taken the bike to a local nsr expert (Yuki), who has gone over the bike, He found that the last rebuilder didn't know what they were doing and have put the wrong pistons in, they are the same size but only have a single ring compared to the nsrs double, Luckily it didn't do any damage to the barrel! So new pistons will be ordered, and he's checking over the crank tommorow. So no real progress with the bike as of yet, but I have started preping the fairings for a respray after the dismal effort of the last owner. Anyway the bike will basically be in hibernation till I start real work on it after christmas.
The bike did come with lights/mirrors, they were just disconnected from the recent home respray, and it did come with lower fairings.
