I was riding today and ran out of gas. I did not know that it was the problem. I kept on riding and it died on me a few times. I finally figured it out later on after trying to ride it. I put it in reserve and it ran fine after. Do you guys know if this causes any engine damage? Have you guys experienced this before?
Never a good idea to run out of fuel on a 2-stroke, as you risk breaking through the film of oil the mixture creates between the piston and barrel, even with a stock oil pump set-up.
You would be very unlucky to do any real damage however, unless you ran it a couple hundred metres down a hill trying to restart it with no fuel in!! _________________ Andy.

What i want to know is why do they always run out when your going fast and make you grab the clutch, why never run out at traffic lights!? _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...
Mine ran out at a stop sign. At first I thought the clutch was going out because everytime I released the clutch it does not want to go and dies. I start it back up and it runs fine for a little while. Later on it just lost power and died.

If your bike is pretty much stock, that's a bit early dude. You should be able to get around 200kms+ (depending on the way you ride ) before requiring to switch over to reserve. Once my trip meter hits 200km, I just fill up at the nearest BP or Mobil (Ultimate or 8000) and reset my trip meter again. Have only ever once needed to switch to reserve. _________________ Jerry Lai

If anyone saw Top Gear on Sunday (UK), they tested supermarket unleaded (95 RON) against BP Ultimate (97 RON) and Shell Optimax (98 RON). With a new Impreza WRX Sti, the Optimax came out tops with about a 10bhp gain over even Ultimate. _________________ NSR300R - Why did i ever have a 250...
but it was only the performance cars that showed any kind of change, you standard escort or whatever didnt really benefit. _________________ MC21SP - Roth-tax

That's right. So hopefully spending the extra will make a difference with a bike, as our engines are in a higher state of tune usually than a standard Impreza. _________________ NSR300R - Why did i ever have a 250...
I can feel a real difference on my RVF between 95 and 97 ron and it does measurably better mpg, the transalp feels the same but returns better mpg (not enough to make it worthwhile though) but on the NSR there's no feelable difference whatsoever and I can't do a mpg check as I have no speedo.
And in reality most road going NSR's are in a pretty low state of tune, 240bhp/litre is not exactly high for a 2 stroke. _________________ Please do not PM me technical questions, if you can't find it on the Forum start a thread

And if I remember, the octane is only an issue with regard to compression isn't it? A low comp engine will not benefit from higher octane gas will it?
I'm sure we did this a while back, but as usual I've mixed up and forgotton most of it! _________________ MC21SP Plaything

Dave...spot on, seemingly slightly higher octane is not going to reap more power out of a 2 stroke on it's own, it may prevent some detonation if you're running too close to the edge but you'd be better off running richer rather than depending on the quality of the pump gas at any one station.
Clearly careful setting up of a bike with any higher ron fuel will give more power but if you've set up properly with 95 ron then 97, 99, 105 ron will do nothing.
I used to always buy 97 ron after I got my '28 back from Apex purely out of detonation fear, then on the eve of the 2nd dyno day Andy, Steve, Bill and myself went for a spin, it was a nice cool evening and the garage we went to sold 95 ron only. I then spent a good hour with plenty of WOT in 6th action chasing Steve and Andy over the moors will Bill occasionally zipping past at a pace only ram air assisted 16/38 geared NSR250s with 8 stone riders on can manage. I've never worried about it since.
And as mentioned plug chops are hard to read on 97 ron. _________________ Please do not PM me technical questions, if you can't find it on the Forum start a thread
We did some tests on optimax in the bikes and found it lost around 2bhp per 100 over stock unleaded. My 18 runs very well on stock unleaded but runs like a bag on high ron stuff.
I did some back to back runs on the 21 with unleaded and avgas and when jetted for avgas picked up just over 1bhp. Not a real improvement, i got better results playing with boost bottles. _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...
You guys know what would cause my bike to run through fuel quickly? - I don't think I get anywhere near 200 ks out of a full tank. May be connected to the neverending problems with cylinder misfiring/carbon on plugs Ive been having?? _________________ '87 MC16
