Crank center seal??

Tue Dec 13, 2005 11:12 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hello all.
Does anyone know where I might get crank center seals for an MC18?
Or at least a seal that will do?

Cheers
Kieran

I'm not sure they exist as a seperate item. I 'think' they're part of the centre bearing...

Careful here chaps. The crank in an MC18 is completely different to the later 21 and 28 models, and is not interchangeable.

The centre bearing is different in that it doesn't run a combined bearing/seal like the 21/28 crank. It's a plain open bearing. There's then a seperate seal that runs alongside this bearing.

With this in mind it would probably be a cheaper replacement part compared to the 21/28 crank centre bearing. If you can find it of course.

I think that I've got an 18 crank up at the circuit, and I've got a couple of 28 cranks right here with me, so I can't check right away, but can do later probably.

Not sure about swapping bearings as the 21/28 crank is designed with a step on the inside where you can't see, which is where the seal, errr, seals. I don't think that the 18 has this step, so you may have to make up a sweat fitted collar to act in the same way as it would if fitted to the 21/28 crank. This collar would also act as a distance spacer for pressing the crank back together so would need to be pretty accurate.

A job for Brother Stephen when he returns from paradise.

Good news on the MC18 crank seal issue...

Hopefully I will have a source for them by the New Year, and will be adding them and all the main bearings to the Marketplace.
