hello everyone i just reciently bought my first GP bike and am very excited to start the restoration. i currently have a garage full of yamaha RD's and am ready for an exotic 2 stroke, i would appreciate any and all information given to me as this is a different animal, i will be logging in here alot probably with many questions so please bare with me. and it is nice meeting all of you and thanks.
Hello Mark, and let me be he first to welcome you aboard!
We'll be well interested to see the development of your first NSR, and to hear about the RD's too, in due course. There are a couple of guys here with "special" RD's already.
So this is the blue MC16/18 from "Craigslist"? I think that looks rather neat! A lot of potential! I like the low pipes on it! Looks more like an '18 than a '16 though, but the images are too clear. _________________ Andy.

Thanks Andy! i think its a combination of stuff between 16/18 been racking my brain tryin to figure it out with the help of the NSR world parts list and model history the frame and eng are 16 but i think the dash is 18 it has a temp gauge not a row of idiot lights, didnt the 16 have low pipes too? i am wanting to get a new wiring harness and straighten all this mess up but it looks like the 16/18 have the same one even though the dash is different and the fuse panel looks to be in a different location as well. all the black box's in the back are all zip tied on so i wonder where are all the brackets to hold that stuff on?..LOL more later....
The Mk1 MC18 and the MC16 had similar setups, with separate RC Valve controller and ignition boxes, but the MC16 uses 2 CDI's, whereas the MC18 uses just the one - the first of the PGM units.
Yes, the MC16 uses the lower pipes. They just seem to "work" with the MC18 style bodywork in my opinion, especially with the shorter silencers.
Double check the engine number. You may be surprised and find out it's an MC18 motor, which is a better starting point than the MC16. Nothing wrong with the '16, but it takes more effort to realise its' potential; it is nearly 20 years old, after all! All engine numbers begin with MC16E, so don't let this fool you. A quick (but not fool-proof) check is to look at the heads. If there is a bleed nipple on the coolant outlet union of each head (and the top one returns to the thermostat housing) then it is extremely likely to be an MC16 motor, or at least an MC16 top-end. If there are no bleeds/no return to the thermostat housing, then it could either be an MC18 top-end on the '16 motor, or a complete MC18 motor, which will bolt right in with minimal modification of the engine bushes.
Some performance modifications for the MC16 have been discussed on the Forum already, and there are a couple of guys here toying with them. Cue Jeff and Matt!!
Maybe Jeff will be kind enough to post some images of his MC16 - it's a cracker!
As you may have guessed, I have a bit of a soft spot for the MC16's! _________________ Andy.

hey andy i dont see a nipple, you mean a bleed nipple like on brake calipers? on the bottom head the water exits the head and goes to the radiator and on the top one it looks like maybe to a thermostat but i dont see any brake caliper type bleed nipples... thanks

it has a provision for one on the bottom cyl head there isnt one on the top, is there supposed to be a temp sensor on this bike mine has mc18 clocks but they arent workin and i noticed the mc16 uses totally different clocks is there a temp indicator in it _________________ DAYTONA SPECIAL,74 RD350 LONG ROD, 2 RD200 ELECTRIC'S,88 NSR 250RG, MICRO SPRINT CAR W/CR 250 ENG
