Reeds?

Wed Dec 21, 2005 2:34 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

I hear of people installing Boyesen reeds in their NSR's but which ones fit? Will they require triming to fit? I did the search but only found that they were being used. Thanks for the help.

Don't know is my answer, closely followed with "Why Boyeson?" Don't you fancy some Tyga or HRC ones?

Boyesen reeds are good, I tryed them on several dirt bike and they worked fine.
the tyga reeds are very good, I don't think boyesen are better because of the stuffers.
if you want much more mid range power, tyga carbon reeds must be fit

I added a link to your Site on our Links page Laurent. If you would like to write up a profile in English and send me some pictures, I will add it to the Racers section at a later date.

They can't change the air fuel ratio, only the carb or a leak can do that!

Boyesen because I can get so much cheaper. With 2 projects going now and a 3rd on the back burner, I'm spread a little thin Smile Thanks scottvor, did you need to trim them at all? Thanks for all the input!

I've got lying around some Boyesen dual stage power reeds, some tyga carbon reeds and obviously some std reeds, if Mr Grant can supply some HRC stuffers as well that little lot will keep me busy for quite some time.

The Boysen reeds are mega different to the std ones, there are two of them, one thin one that is just one flat piece not 3 petals on top (underneath when on the bike) of a thicker one which has 3 ports in a similar design to the block itself but smaller so it effectivly makes the intake smaller unless air velocity is high enough to lift it, and they run without the reed stop plate.
So it'll be interesting to see how much effect they have on top end and mid range power / useabilty (and in what direction Idea).

Carbs off is no big deal especially on a '21, it's far worse on a '28, you really need to drop the fairing to get to the l/h carb clip, the hole in the plastic bit isn't in quite the right place and it's much easier to get to if you undo the overflow bottle mounts, the needles are a right pain to get out as well, Steve and Andy did them in situ but on your own it's a carbs off properly (as in totally disconnected from the bike and get them on a table) job then mess about with the carb link so you can get the needle holder out properly.

It's only an hours job though, I guess it depends what your used to, back in my boy racer days a camshaft change on a 2 litre mk1 or 2 Escort (which was a far too regular occurance as the hit or miss lubrication of the Pinto cam is it's weak point) entailed removing the head which clearly costs money and risks getting bits in the oil or, either dropping the entire engine and gearbox assembley (or lowering the engine crossmember), spliting the engine from the box and removing the engine as the cam although it's an OHC engine comes out backwards Rolling Eyes
I've seen 2 litre petrol Transit's with a hole in the bulkhead to get round this problem Shocked
My Transit needs doing right now, I heard it start to tap a bit on the way back from Steves after the Chelsea rideout and it's now quite bad, there's nothing you can do about it (apart from buy a cross drilled race cam), it's just a poor design, now that is a rubbish job, the NSR is heaven to work on next to it.
