New guy saying hello

Mon Jan 09, 2006 9:17 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hello everyone, Okay so i've basically deceided to get another bike after a 4 year break. (Last bike was a NC30) Having owned various 2 strokes in the past (RD125LC, KMX125, RD350 YPVS, RGV250)and not planning on doing to many miles a year i've deceided to get a 250 race rep and after considering a choice between a KR-1S/RGV/NSR i have deceided that the NSR is the bike for me. I have just bought a house so don't want to spend loads of money on a bike. The main problem is that these little gems seem to be rarer than rocking horse sh*t and buying one is easier said than done anyway sombody (possibly a member on here?) has got a MC18 R2J up for sale on a well known internet auction site at the moment, it has got a bit of "cosmetic damage" it has done 15000 miles although the speedo isn't working so how accurate this mileage is i don't know also it has no m.o.t. it's reached £371 the last time i looked, what do you guys think it's worth paying for a bike like this?

Hi there!

Hmm... It depends on how badly you want it. As a guide I'd say no more than about 475... I just picked up an MC21 for not much more, that was in a road worthy state.

Welcome! Very Happy

I was in the same boat as you mate. Sold my last bike due to kids/house, then decide i just HAD to get another. Had an RGV like you & really fancied another 250 2-stroke, and fell in love with the NSR (cos it was a little different). I bought an 88 MC18 off of eBay for £250 which had a seized piston a few months ago. Rest of the bike seems sound (fairings not too great, but all there), still waiting for my bloody piston kit to turn up Mad

The thing is i've probably spent another £400 on it since the initial £250 outlay, so buying a cheapy isn't always best. But in my case i'd rather spend as i go (cos i'm skint) & didn't have a spare £1500 to buy a half decent MC21.

But what ever you decide, good luck & stick around Cool

Skoot.

Cheers for the advice guys

Hey Skoot good to see i'm not the only Skint insomniac on this forum Very Happy

I really like the look of MC18's theres just somthing about them ? and around £450 they just seem to offer so much bang for your buck ! my plan is the same as yours Skoot buy the bike relativly cheap then spend a few quid rebuilding the top end etc... and at the end of all that you have a fairly reliable bike that probably owes you about a grand give or take a few quid . i've got nothing against MC21's and would love to own one eventually, but i think i would prefer to own a half decent MC18 than a doggy MC21 for the same money??

StephenRC45's MC18 is a ripper! Last tested (with conservative compression) it was around 61hp, that's complete with (slightly modified) airbox!

Just read somwhere that Honda no longer make crankshafts or centre bearings for MC18's and that if you have a failure then the engine is more or less scrap ? should this put me off buying an 18 ? or can these parts be sourced non genuine Question

I think most bearings can still be got if you put the time into looking. Honda dont list bearing on their own anyway for the cranks. If the worst came to the worst you could always fit an RS crank into it anyway and go the F3 route!

My '18 has quite a few miles on it and so far the crank has been perfect. Dont let things like that put you off.

Oh well just missed out on the auction Crying or Very sad , bike sold for £531. Taking Maxim's advice i stopped bidding when it started to go over £500. after reading lots of threads on here & looking at aftermarket parts availibilty i've made the decision to spend a bit more cash and wait for a 21 to turn up. So if anyone has a cheapish 21 that they want to sell, preferably in he south east area then let me know. in the mean time the search goes on!
