I`ve been building up my bike & fitted a dry clutch.
Everything seems to be working fine, it rattles like I remember my old TZ`s used to but there is also a high pitched whining, almost whistling noise.
As I`ve never heard another NSR dry clutch, I thought I`d ask you lot if yours does the same.
Near enough everything is new clutch wise, I replaced the transmission with some spares I had as the single selector fork & associated gears had burnt & worn badly.
When I assembled it everything turned smoothly & there were no tight spots or anything contacting anything else.
Due to worrying about the noise I stripped the clutch again & checked for it rubbing on the baffle plate. I also changed the tranny oil pump as I thought it might be causing the noise.
So what I`m asking is, is it normal for a new clutch to make this noise?
Will it bed in & quieten down?
I`m thinking it may be the tranny, although it makes the noise both with the clutch engaged & disengaged & also with the bike in gear stationary & moving.
I checked the water pump also to see if it was rubbing, seems ok.
Beggining to think it may be a whine due to the primary gears being a bit tight, although seem to assemble easily enough.
Thanks in advance
Roy.

Where did you get the bits from,, for the dry clutch , Im guessing like me youve done a conversion? Mine rattles while you hold the lever in but once engadged the plates (let the lever out) there isnt a whine or noise at all in fact it sounds like a wet clutch (very quite), I only ask because the only thing i came accross when i did mine was that if using a 28 box on a 21 you need the primary gear from the crank as well, and visa versa for a 21 to a 28, if its 28 to 28 or 21 to 21 you dont it should all swap over? sounds like its the primary gears to me as in some of the situations you described the gearbox wouldnt be turning so its that end!,
only other silly thinks are the rubber seal on the tranny case? water/oil pump (did you put the washer back in? (for the water pump matt highlighted that there is a washer that likes to stick to the case when removed and if not aware it can fall off)...what about the push rod? did the bearing go back in (small one that sits at the end of the push rod? hope this help
Definitely shouldn't be a whine. A good rattle, though even that is tamed with the rubber dampers on the plates. _________________ MC21SP Plaything

hey guys,
on the topic of clutch sounds.. my new mc21SE is making a very terrible sound, which is coming from inside the clutch cover.
before anybody suggests it is because of the dry clutch let me assure you it is not! my friend also has an MC21SE and his doesnt make any noise like that! its like a very annoying rattle, like something is hitting with every revolution in there.
but when i pull the clutch in, it makes the normal dry clutch sound.. and at higher speeds throttling, it disappears.
when i idle its there too.
i took the clutch apart but cant really see anything broken etc.
does anybody have any ideas as you could be saving my bike if not my SANITY!!!
What condition are the dampers in? When the fail it make a LOT more noise. _________________ MC21SP Plaything

After lots of head scratching & pulling it apart & re-assembling it about 4 times, I finally figured out it was the clutch primary gear rubbing on the side case.
It was where the boss is for the large oil seal. As I mentioned earlier the baffle plate had signs of being rubbed by the wet clutch, so I stupidly bent it back inwards slightly to make sure it cleared the clutch gear rivets.
What I didn`t realise is it actually supports the side case to a certain degree.
Luckily I had another unmolested one to fit, this one I tweaked slightly outwards this time at the rear end.
After fitting the case again & trying it everything`s okay.
Oh yeah, I also noticed that the water pump nylon gear was cracking on the large boss on the bearing side. Thought I`d replace it with the one from the wet clutch cover but, you guessed it, that one was cracked also.
I had one more in another wet clutch cover this one is also very slightly cracked but is the best of the three. Have fitted it until I get a new one.
Just got to pull it apart one more time to put back the best gearbox oil pump!
hrm.. thats what i was thinkin too. only im not sure exactly what this means. where are the rubber dampers supposed to be? what are they supposed to look like?
those in the know, please enlighten me!
thanks in advance!
Good news Chester, and thanks for adding to our knowledge.
The dampers are small blocks which fit to one of the plates in the clutch set. You'll notice (or should) that one of the plates is different to the rest, and several of the lugs have a notch. Have a look at the parts manual pages to see what I mean. _________________ MC21SP Plaything

hey guys.. so i believe i have found the solution. i took apart my clutch (which i am getting very skilled at doing) and checked for the rubber damper. im pretty new to nsrs/bikes in general, so i didnt even know what they were. so when i checked the different plate which has the grooves for the dampers, surprise surprise.. they werent worn, yep, u guessed it, there were NONE IN SIGHT! no wonder the stupid clutch was making so much noise!
so i guess now i have to go and find 4 rubber dampers.
i only have 2 questions left. well actually three.
1. does this sound like the problem?
2. are mc21SE rubber dampers easily obtainable from bike shops or are they somehow unique? where could i get a set of 4 from.. ?
3. the plate that the dampers should go on is not at the very back, its 2nd to last. should it be at the very back or is there no difference?
2. Honda dealer - look up the part number on the parts pages.
3. Check the order on the parts pages. _________________ MC21SP Plaything

Just 'cos you don't have a dry clutch on your 18! You wait 'til you get one... you'll love all the attention! No-ones looking at you on that R6 you know!! _________________ Andy.
