No spark on my mc21

Sat Sep 04, 2004 2:21 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi!

My NSR 250SP mc21 would not spark. I have changed my spark plugs, and there is nothing wrong with my PGMIII.
What could be wrong?
please help me....

No spark from either coil or just one? If its just one that isnt sparking change the coils over and see if the other starts to spark. If it does you know the coil is duff.

If neither coil is sparking then check the grounds and the feeds to each coil. If your sure the PGM is ok check the ignition pickups are ok on the rotor. If you are getting a voltage from the pick up to the PGM but not from the PGM to the coils check the wiring hasnt rubbed thought and isnt grounding to the frame.

You can do all that with a multimeter, lots of tea and biscuits and some quiet time.

and check your battery before you get started too Very Happy

I have no spark from either spark plug 1 or 2. The PGM III is used, I bought it from TYGA and they said that it was working fine. But how can I do a test of the PGM. Strange that both spark plugs would not spark. Could it be the flywheel or the stator that is not working? How can I test this?
How about the REKUCHI fire ASSY, what does this do?

Sorry my bad english... I am from norway Wink

Why did you change it? If the old way stopped working, did you find out why, as the power valve motor may be burning out the PGM and you have just broken the new one too!

My bike was crashed so the PGM was destroyed. How can I test that the PGM is working?

The best suggestion is to try the PGMIII on another known working bike to eliminate the PGM from the equation.

If any of you have PGM trouble be sure to trace the cause of the problem before fitting a new PGM, as they blow rather too easily and if the root of the cause hasn't been cleared up then you'll keep blowing them......very expensive!

Usual causes for a dodgy PGM are water damage causing a short within the PGM, so always be a little careful when washing the bike (no power washers), and the biggest cause of all is wrongly adjusted RC valve cables and dirty RC valves. This overloads the PGM causing failure.

I believe that Andy's got a section of setting the valve cables, and it's worth pulling the pipes off now and again to check the condition of the valves.

As Matt says, the only real way is to fit it to another bike if you can. Is that possible?

I don't know if there is other NSR 250's in norway. Maybe I can send the PGM to you, then you can test it on your bike=) But is it not possible to test the PGM in other ways? resistance etc.....?

I was looking in the Parts Manual and wonder what does the REKUCHI fire ASSY do? Can this be the reason the bike won't spark?

That's not a part I'm familiar with.

You're welcome to send it to me and I'll swap it onto my bike to check it. I don't think there is another way without the correct computers to read the map inside and such like.

I can put a meter across the wires on mine, but the values may or may not be the same as another, and there will no doubt be a spread of acceptable readings.

Time to book that UK holiday you've been promising yourself!

Do you have some values from your meter test?

Maybe I will send the PGM to you for a test if the shipping is not to expensive. What's you home adress?
