The 3XV is a nightmare to derestrict, and unless you (or someone you know well) are in Japan, getting the parts could prove extremely difficult.
To get 'real' power, you MUST get an SP, the 'R' model has a much smaller exhaust port (plus it's the wrong shape!), and the list of go-faster goodies is really a TZ spare-parts list - ignition, heads, etc.!!
Pipes are available through RG500.com in the USA (please go through our Links page to get to them), and they will ship to the UK, but without the ignition mod's and other TZ parts, you'll be hitting the low 50's only. (Some similar restriction problems as the MC28, but an HRC ignition card is readily available for the Honda - for now!)
Once tuned and set up though, capable of superb power up in the mid 70's. The 3XV-SP Matt Patterson from TYGA Performance used to race was 76.something hp! Don't expect to get that without a lot of money though.
In terms of V.F.M. though, the Yamaha can't even compare to an MC21 I'm afraid. Delimiting the NSR's ignition is free, the porting on the 'R' and 'SP' is the same, the suspension is typical Honda quality (maybe change/upgrade the oil), and the build quality of the NSR is superb.
Reliability on any 2-stroke is down to how it's (been) looked after I think!
lets be honest, the NSR, and especially the MC21, cannot compare to the 3xv, so get used to the sight of the 3xv tail pipes because that's all you are gonna see if your on a NSR>

I have a '93 SP, my bro has a 3XV. We put lots of miles on them here in the mts. of VT. ride just about every weekend. We are always switching up so I have plenty of saddle time in on both. Both bikes handle excellent, but the 3XV doesn't have the top end pull that the NSR has. The Yamaha seems to have a totally different powerband. It has much better mid range for sure, but just doesn't have that "pull to redline" kind of power up top like the NSR. Just my .02

I have a 3xv as well as a mc16 and mc18 r5k the later running 60hp, but on the twisty stuff the yam pisses all over the nsr when my kid brother is on it and he is a better rider than I am (ie he stays on longer).

I have a few well sorted MC 21`s, and a TZR SPR. The TZR is faster than the NSR and has a narrower powerband than the MC21. The NSR`s handle better, and are better on the brakes. On a short track, the Honda is the weopon of choice IMHO. _________________ Mike
If you throw a million dollars at them, and change virtually every component in the motor/bolted on to the motor to TZ spec, then they'll certainly give a well sorted NSR a run for it's money - probably even outrun it!
In the real world, where most of us can't really ride for sh1t (let's face it - we can't - if we could we'd be out winning races every weekend!), it's all really a matter of personal preference!
The majority here love Honda's... that's why we're here on the Site in the first place! Some can be objective (I try, but will always be a little biased!), but at the end of the day, there aren't many that could make out much of a difference!
Now, sure, if you want to own/ride a TZR that looks like a UK TZR125R from most angles, then that's up to you! I prefer to ride something a bit special! Oops - now I've done it! :lol:

and so would an old R1. but who gives a toss! its not what you ride, it the fact that you do. so lets stop all this my dicks bigger than yours stuff. i have more fun on my nsr or 350yam, than i ever had on my 1000. and i don't need to go warp speed to enjoy it. and lets face it nothing comes close to the feel of rideing a well tuned two stroke. be it a honda, yam, kwack or suzook.
