Do I need a new crank???

Sat Dec 09, 2006 10:36 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Are there any other ways to check the crank other than side clerance??? My crank has two seasons of track days and specs at .584mm side clerance. I was planning on replacing it but as usual funds are tight and quite honestly a new crank is not going to make it any faster. I have no spedometer so milage is unknown. But if I had to guess I would say around 1500 track Mi. The last thing I want is boom at the end of a straight though!!!

I think to really know for sure you'll have to take it apart and check the bearings and bearing surfaces. Otherwise just go for it and hope for the best. Maybe replace the oter bearings just for insurance.

I'm starting to think the same. Has anyone ever had a complete failure??? I never have in a 2 smoker. A couple in a diesel but thats always an oiling problem or a bearing.

Oh yes I was ok , just pulled the clutch in as it started to nip up and it went very quiet and did not turn over again . The bike has only done about 15000 km but the crank looks as it has had water sitting in it at some point ,so rusted the centre bearing .I had only done about 15 miles on it ,I'm not going to work out £/mile .

That was the same problem my crank had. I guess it comes from leaving it parked outside without capping the exhaust. Once it starts to develop any rust then the crank is junk.
