Been a while since last post, been busy with a 4-stroke (gasp!) motard.
Anyway, need a small slice of info, if anyone has it.
QUESTION: My thermostat sh@t itself not long ago, and the best i can come up with is a 2nd hand unit. Being a mechanic with a major hangup over fitting a 15 year old thermostat to my bike, can someone tell me where I might obtain one, or is there still availability in Japan ?
Aftermarket options or other honda thermostats that fit????
Once again, thanks again gentlemen!!!

I would think you should still be able to get a new genuine one from your local Honda dealer. Either that or test the second hand one before you fit it to make sure its working. _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...
thanks for reply stephen, yep my one is cactus! checked it. Need a new thermostat and o-ring. Gave the question to matt and paul, but they said they only currently had 2nd hand units... Which led me to believe that perhaps unavailable new... ?
Might have to get my "import" shop to try for the parts for me.
Any simple solutions anyone? _________________ ........."I love the smell of 2-stoke in the morning.......Smells like victory"............
Don't fit it and warm up properly before you go. I don't have one... _________________ MC21SP Plaything

I don't have one fitted either. Just make up a copy of the HRC washer that lives inside and like Dave says warm it up before you ride it. _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...
no worries gents, any idea what the hrc washer looks like? Does it look like a coin with a hole in it, with a machined line on the side to fit an o-ring seal ?
By doing this, will the bike have greater temp. deviations?
Thanks! _________________ ........."I love the smell of 2-stoke in the morning.......Smells like victory"............
Shouldn't really once up to temp. All you might find is that it runs too cool if the weather isn't hot. In this case, put tape across the radiatior to reduce the cooling area.
Do it one strip at a time until the right temp is achieved - or apply three or four lines, and if it gets too warm, remove a strip. _________________ MC21SP Plaything

hahaha , ah Dave sorry for my laughter mate, please excuse me I live in Melbourne Australia. Its probably the MOST! renowned city in the world for "four seasons in one day!"...... Melbournites back me up
Thats been my problem Dave, she froze open, so for instance a month ago I jumped on my bike at approx 5am and she begged to run in 3 degrees air temp (with bike temp after warm up at approx 30 degrees while stationary), and by lunch (34 degrees air temp) she was running at 90 degrees +.
Any thermostats I can use from other bikes even??
Thanks Dave! _________________ ........."I love the smell of 2-stoke in the morning.......Smells like victory"............
Aha, in that case, what I'd do is head down the local autofactor with your stat, and go through all the ones in the shop till I found one the same. Maybe do that at a bike breaker, as once you've found a match you can go buy a new one.
Personally, I'd start by looking at things like the Suzuki or Yamaha 250's, or the 400cc 4 strokes. They all came to market about the same time, and I'd be surprised if they each had totally different thermostats. _________________ MC21SP Plaything

Its X-Mas time / new years silly season, so there is no frikken way I'm finding a new thermostat at the 'mo. (believe me I've tried!!)
SO, I'll machine up a "HRC" type open thermostat out of alloy. The question of the day is..... What diameter should the open hole in the centre be? Does anyone have a pic of one??
Thanks again gents! _________________ ........."I love the smell of 2-stoke in the morning.......Smells like victory"............
I make them the same dia as the stock hole in the thermostat, this gives you a small lip all the way around the inside of the rubber seal. _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...
Why bother? They run without one at all... _________________ MC21SP Plaything

because the rubber seal is designed to fit over the edge of the thermostat, if you removed the thermostat and then simply replace the seal it can deform and leak. Thats why . _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...
