Bicycle speedometer

Fri Dec 29, 2006 12:34 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

I'm contemplating buying a bicycle speedometer for the 21SP but I want to get opinions on them first from others that have used them. Are there any good or bad features I should be looking for? I know next to nothing about them.

I use one of these, being gps based theres no wires involved.

It also maps your route with speeds etc

Hmm, never really thought about the newer gps devices. I guess they've gotten small enough now that it is feasible. Did you mount yours on the bike?

forget about it if you want to ride at night.
I bought one with a backlight, but only found out after that it only lights up if you press the button, And then it only stays lit for a few seconds.

I just fix mine to the top yoke using the strap it comes with, as for the light the Garmin one stays on until you turn it off.

Just get a converter for your stock speedo. It is simple to install and changes stock speedo from reading in kph to mph. Google Motrax.
I have one on my mc-18 works great. Got it from Cycle gear.

KPH is not my problem. I have a nice transparent overlay with MPH but, I've changed the rear sprocket to a 43 tooth. I'm WAY off. I get tired of trying to figure out if I'm speeding or not (always feels like it). I'd rather know if I'm speeding or not as I pass the police on the side of the road!!!

A few friends and I were on the Blue Ridge Pkwy. this summer and I thought we were riding at a pretty good clip. My speedo said so. I had forgotten about changing the rear sprocket though. I mentioned it to one of them later and got a laugh out of him. We were only going 5-10 mph over the limit. I could've sworn it was 15-20.

Dumb suggestion time, but why not ride with a mate at the limit, and put a new mark on the speedo so you know? Do it at city limit and highway limit, and you'll never get it wrong!

Not a dumb question. The overlay is pretty much invisible in the dark even with the speedo light on. I'm back trying to remember what speed I'm going. The speedo I have even has MPH marks on the face itself and they're very hard to see at night.

I just like the idea of being able to glance down and check my speed. The bike speedometer seemed like the easiest and cheapest solution. I like the idea of the GPS too. I'd rather mount the bike speedo on there and forget about it and not have to worry about it being stolen (they're cheap).

On my '18 I run a 38t rear down from the 41 stock and have the same trouble. I use a motrax converter the same as Steve. All I do is remember I'm going around 10mph faster than what the speedo says. This isnt the case of course as its a % increase but it keeps me out of trouble.

On the F3 I dont have a speedo at all, I work on the.. if i'm being overtaken im going to slow, if i'm doing the over taking im going to fast, and if the little clock says 13k and there are no more gears im going to prison principle.

How does changing a sprocket affect the speedo? Where is it taken off from on the NSR's? RGV speedo is connected to the front wheel you see so it doesn't matter what gearing you run, it's always 10% over Laughing

As for bicycle speedo's (not the swimming trunks) I have seen a normal cateye used on a 916 that I rode. It seemed really good but I wondered about accuracy due to tyre deformation at speed. The unit is set up by meauring the rolling circumference of the tyre but how much does this change at say 100mph?

GPS should be the better way to go if the unit updates fast enough, ie the Tom Tom in my car reacts relitivley slowly to hard acceleration jumping numbers as it updates. But then speed is not it's primary use so it doesn't matter much.

From the gearbox sprocket, unless youve binned the cover to save a few gramms.

OK, the other alternative is to check the revs at certain speeds when in top. So if 6000rpm in top equates to 60 mph, then you'll always know. That's how I got round France when my speedo cable broke on day two of a two week tour...

(and 5000 = 80mph on my FJ!)

I have one of these computers on my CR500 works ok. I think the pick up would be long enough to get to the rear wheel.
