The bad bit is that this type of software has been in use in Thailand for the last couple of years. It's based on the GSM network (I use this network... Sad ) and can pinpoint a phone down to about 100m.

It's supposed to ensure the safety of employees blah blah blah.

"They" just want to know where you are all the time.

Not good. Evil or Very Mad

The technology has been around for a long time. In the US you can turn this option on at the phone to report your GPS coords when you dial 911 (emergency), or you can set it to send the info on each call. You can also turn it off 100% so it never sends.

The technology is now being used for services that allow parents to hand their kids a phone that has this feature enabled, and the parents can log into a website and track their kids (for safety purposes of course).

I know I worked on a project proposal for a large courier (Mail type thing) that we were planning on using the GPS stuff so the courier could quickly have directions sent to their phone for the next delivery (based on where they currently are).

There are good applications for this technology, but like any technology there is also bad applications for it.

Seriously doubt that unless it has a GPS tracker built in to it. It may send a co-ord based on antena triangulation, but it won't be a GPS location! Wink

Actually, yes, it's the cell site. However the newer phones that are coming out have GPS capabilities built in, and can report that information.

I know my cell phone has this capability, and ones we were looking to use on some projects have as well. Doesn't take much to add, and is getting closer to being standard equipment on phones.

The cell site is still pretty close, and based on triangulation, can determine your location to a rather small area (closer then some would like).

My brother has a program on has phone that is turn by turn directions. All you do is sign up on line through the phone and put in a destination and it guides you turn by turn. So its very possible and its going on already. So when its time to run throw that cell phone in the bushes and hope there's no tracker in my PGM Twisted Evil

all depends on the application Wink For 911 purposes It's great. For professional (delivery, trucking, field service, etc.) purposes it's also a great tool. For the government to track your movements (or anyone else for that matter) it's scary.

Of course one of the issues with GPS is it's working off a satellite. You need line of site for the most part to get a good signal, and generally for proper coordinates you need more then one satellite. So in doors may not work, as well as wooded areas, under ground, etc.

If your really worried about it, you could simple cover your house in tin foil and keep the government from knowing where you are Smile
