Seized engine and other stuff

Sat Apr 14, 2007 10:02 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi everyone, new guy here so please be gentle with me.

I've got an MC18 R5k but to to a combination of circumstances it ended up being laid up in my mum's garage for a few years. Lokking at it and trying to get it back on the road and of course it's seized Sad so I'm now stripping it dwon to have a look. Never had to do any big work on it before so before I make a complete hash a couple of questions.

Does the engine have to come out to remove the carbs - I think they'll need cleaning.

Is it better to take the heads of in situ to have a look or am I really better off just dropping the engine out.

This could be the beginning of a long running saga

Thanks in advance - Dave

No, the carbs come off with the engine in place with ease. With the bodywork out of the way a long cross head screwdriver can reach the carb mount clips.

You say it's seized, when and how? Did it nip up sometime in the past? Is it still siezed now or can it be turned over?

But having sat for years the crankseals may also be suspect, you need Steve or Andy for mc18 crank help.
And as you say the carbs will need cleaning properly.

Anyway, a full engine rebuild is all in the workshop section (link on the left), it's an mc21 engine but the basics are the same, there's tonnes of info if you search the forums too if you can't find just ask!

And welcome to the forum.

No it's never nipped up, it's just lack of use. Wont turn over either on the kickstart of if I try to bump it.

I was thinking myself that the crankseals may be shot after a few years without running. Is there any way to check without having the crank out?
