hi, is there a way of flushing out the silencers on my mc18 r5k ? got them off the bike just now and one is definately heavier than the other, they both seem to be full of oily gunk. is there some way of safely flushing them out ?
I'll bet they can be cleaned ultrasonicly. I was just going to soak mine in solvent. _________________ james

I have never tried it, but caustic soda is recommended by a lot of people.
There are also industrial chemicals for carbon removal. _________________ Poul

the silencers generally have a packing material (fiberglass, or something like that) to help reduce the noise level. Soaking the silencer probably won't be the best idea, as you will simple water log the packing material. If you have after market silencers where the end caps are riveted onto the tubes, drill out the rivets, pull it all apart, take out the packing material, throw it away (dispose of it properly as it's now a hazardous material with all the oil, or if your in Thailand, simple throw it in the trash ).
Then go down to your local dirtbike shop, and buy new packing material. Wrap up the core with the new packing, using safety wire to hold it all on the core tight and slide it back into the tube. Re-rivet the end cap back onto the tube and away you go. _________________ Charles Gallant
If your trying to clean out your exhaust chambers (the big metal bulbous things), then you can do a couple things. After market chambers that are simple all hollow inside can be cleaned out with a wire brush attached to a drill. Of course the wire brush needs a good long reach, and I have yet to see one that you can buy from the store.
So with that said, you can always make your own.
Go to your local hardware store and get a good long section of plastic coated cable. Get a good thick one, but not so thick you cant get one end in the chuck of your drill.
Cut the plastic coating away for about 5-6 inches on one end. Unravel/wind the strands of wire in the cable and fan the all out.
Take a piece of PVC tubing (just needs to be big enough to get the good end of the cable in, push the PVC pipe so it slides over the unwound wires so you can slide it all into the end of the exhaust. Attach the good end of the cable to the drill, slide the PVC tube with the unwound wire end into the exhaust chamber, pull back the PVC pipe towards the drill and use that as a handle. Let the drill ripe and the wire brush will break up all the carbon build up.
Do this to both ends and you should be good to go.
Of course with stock exhaust chambers there are metal baffles and walls and crap all inside there, so this won't be the best solution. With that, your best bet is to drop some money on some new after market chambers _________________ Charles Gallant

I was going to mention this (did it b4 on my mxer) never thought a nsr would use teh same muffling technique thou??
Best bet is to fit after market silencers. They're cheap and much lighter than the stock cannons.
As for cleaning silencer, you'll have to follow Charles's advice, but you can't do this on the NSR cans unless you chop them apart.
Expansion chamber cleaning advice using the wire is the best plan and gets rid of most of the carbon built up, but I'd recommend taking the bike for a good hard ride before hand to try and burn off/dry up and goo that's hiding in there or it can get quite messy.
Oh and Charles, how dare you say that we just throw the silencer packing straight in the trash here in Thailand. We always wrap it up carefully in a 7-11 bag first, and then throw it in the trash

I'm just basing my guess on the fact that your are allowed to make that soup you use for cleaning in Thailand. If I made that here in the states? Damn I would have the EPA at my doorstep within minutes! Im stuck here with mineral spirits, contact cleaner and a lot of scrubbing _________________ Charles Gallant
Not so much that we're allowed to make it...we just make it
I've bought various engine cleaners from the shop and there's nothing that matches "Soup".
You can see in my garden where the bikes get the soup treatment. Paul loves to do it, so I send him out the back of my workshop and now there's all sorts of funny plants growing
