assessing crank condition

Thu Feb 26, 2004 5:05 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Please excuse my obvious 2-stroke ignorance, but I am wondering what I can determine about the condition of the crank when the cylinders are off, and how I go about doing that. Are there visual signs and/or measurements, e.g., between rods and thrust washers, that can be made, and if the latter, does anyone know the specs for an MC21? Any information appreciated in my painfully slow education.

There are two key indicators of crank condition at the rods. Clearance between the crankwebs and spacers should not exceed .85mm, and radial play at any point on the rod ahould not exceed .10mm.

As for the mains, radial play at the outboard bearings must not exceed .10mm, and no more than .08mm at the center main.

Who was that masked man, and why did he leave a silver bullet? (with apologies to non-U.S. and/or others too young for the reference to make sense). Anyway, thank you "Guest" - much appreciated.

For a graphical representation, go to TECH.NSR-WORLD.COM and click the MC21 Crank link.
