Question about gear oil

Sat Aug 04, 2007 10:43 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

We know that honda suggests 10-30 oil for our nsr's but i have red an

article saying that 80-90 oil can protect better the gearbox.

Has anyone tried this?

What gearbox oil do you use/suggest?

10W40 mineral oil good quality will do the trick. in the UK.

The 10 means the lowest optimum temp, W means winter, and 40 is the highest optimum temperature so if you live in a hot country then use a higher temperature oil and like wise for the winter.

More important is to use a good quality 2 stroke MOTORCYCLE oil as on 2 strokes this is the area that can go wrong.

I run Honda HP 80/85W trans oil in my NSR and TZ. Only use the clutch to start the bikes and take off and get great wear out of the gearbox.

I run Motul Expert Transoil in all my 2 stroke bikes. Great stuff.

Shocked

Eek! Does that mean next time I'm out and the temp drops below 10 degrees I have to walk home?! Laughing

Really? And there was me thinking that the number preceeding the W refered to the oils kinematic viscosity at 40*c, and the number proceeding refered to it at 100*c.

If anyone here can actually explain how the measurement of viscosity actually works and what the units are then please do.

Yes mate, but I'll leave you to wonder whether it's 10 degrees fahrenheit, celsius, kelvin or whatever.

In that case (a) it would be appreciated if you would update your profile as that tends to generate more advice based on location, and (b) I recommend Rockoil GRO fully synthetic transmission oil.

That's only in a dry clutch transmission though.

I use 10W40, neither gearbox has died yet, proper Honda spec will be something like 80w gear oil (that is NOT oil that you use when the ambient temperature is 80 degrees in winter either).

Synthetic 10-40 oil seems to be the right one for the most of us.
