Insurance Valuation. Taking the piss or not

Fri Aug 24, 2007 10:31 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

As some of you may know I was knocked of the NSR in the Isle of Man.

Tha report has come back declaring it a write off and they have valued it at £800. Book price is £1300 but they've knocked £500 off because it has TYGA pipes a steering damper and as they put it, home made radiator expansion bottle (I'm sure HRC would have something to say about that.)

I know my bike wasnt in the best condition pre accident but £800 seems a little low?

They always offer crap money to begin with. Say no, and they'll come back with a higher offer. Get cuttings from the press, internet adverts, ebay details and prove your NSR was worth more with the extra's fitted.

I was offered £5000 initially when my car was written off. I argued and eventually got £6700 for it...

I didn't know about the IOM accident mate, sorry to hear about your bike Sad

As Dave suggested is the only way to get them to pay you what you think it's worth.

When i wrote my limited edition Mini off a few years back now, they first offered me £1100....I paid £1650 for it & knew it was still worth that. All i did was photo copy magazines etc to show its worth & eventually they paid me £1650.

Then again they had to really, as i had already been notified by the DVLA that somebody had tried to re-register it...so they'd obviously already sold it!

Good luck mate....you going to get another NSR?

Mick, I'd hold out for a little more, the first offer is always a little low. I've had three bikes written off/stolen over the years and I've found that there are ways to come out on top.

The first two bikes to be written off were under valued, however they allowed me to buy em back. I think in the case of my MC28SP they sold it to me as scrap at £500. Mint MC28 were going for £2750 at the time. Like yours it was only bodywork, pipes and loom that were damaged, all of which I had as spares. Anyway they paid me out £2000, minus the £500 buy back, total £1500. I then fixed it using the spares and sold it for £1800. So the total I got was £3200......result!

Similar thing happened with my CBR400, although I sold it to Breakers Yard and made a profit that way.

Of course you might not be able to buy back, but if you can, you might find you can pick it up of peanuts.

Good luck....hope it works out.

Buy back is usually 10% of the value. I bought my 21 back from my insurers for around £200...

They've offered it me back for £100 as a cat C. Wink

It'll only take a couple of hundred quid to make it rideable again it's just that I think it's worth more than £800 in it's pre accident state.

A steering damper is a safety modification!Drop the forks 15mm.and get the assesor to ride the bike down a nice bumpy road with the damper turned off, that'll teach the chap. Twisted Evil

Keep arguing with the insurance company and don't give up! After an accident with a taxi pulling out in front of me I was told by the insurance company that the bike was worth about 1400 £ (20 000 sek) and after five minutes over the phone they were willing to give me 1750 £ (25 000 sek) for it. I told them that it was a rare bike and that the bike was in good condition before the crash. I also said that the bike had a sentimental value to me, that I was not responsible for the crash and I was the poor guy with a broken hand and a hurting back. The last "arguments" are a bit strange perhaps, but they worked I guess. Pretty good profit for five minutes "work", and the best part is that I got to keep the bike!...?!

Remember that it's not the whole company you have to convince, hopefully just one person. Don't relent to them, keep on struggling. Good luck.

Just be glad you can claim at all.........

Still hurting from the crash with that b*stard sheep, might still need another op on my hand but I'm living with it for now, next assessment is in October...

Maybe I should buy shares in a drug company, god knows I'm geeting through enough paracetamol these days Sad

Bike is fixed though, cost me £15 for a new set of lights (rectangular car spot lamps) and £35 for a PM Tuning (?) race can (that came off a CR125 of all things) Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
Would have appreciated retreiving costs for damaged leathers, wrecked helmet, destroyed gloves and smashed Motorola RAZR plus compensation for injuries though

How do I add photos Andy?

Hold out for more, they clearly don't understand what the bike is and the additional value the accessories add!!!!!

Hope you weren't too badly injured

All the best
