hi guys,
back on the nsr bandwagon.....
just picked up a 99 honda vfr recently..........
now before anybody screams blasphemy let me explain.....
i needed a bike and quick and unfortunately the nsr just wasnt working well......
but the nsr keeps pulling me drawing back.....black magic?....
anyways ,getting to the serious bits now........
heres whats happening with the bike.....
-----the powervalves seem to be working fine
------but performance is down
------she does not accelerate in 4ht 5th and 6th gear.....( why?)
------takes ages to get to 60 miles/hr.....this bike is supposed to rip....
------the mechanic says that one cylider seems to be cutting off at about
7000 rpm and this is causing my problems.......
------he says that its either the plugs or that the cylinder has lost compression due to worn out rings.........
------does this sound right????......
------i trust him .........but id like inputs from you guys........you have far more experience and knowledge when it comes to this so any inputs will be
appreciated.....
------the funds to repair her have been okayed and so i want to do her up proper.......mint ........
thanks guys......all help is welcomed....... _________________ nothin like a two stroke kick up the backside..
hi guys.........
i also want to change her sproket ratios.....
dont mind sacrificing some top end poke....
any idea what ratios i should go in for??? _________________ nothin like a two stroke kick up the backside..
14T/42T front and rear -- it's a great combination if you don't want to go too fast, but want to get there like a lunatic! Allegedly!!
How does the bike start and idle. How does it ride out of the power? If you have the ignition on (engine not running) and disconnect the TPS, does the servo motor sweep to the "Hi" position? If you then plug the TPS back in, does it return to "LO"? This will at least verify the servo is doing it's job correctly.
Info on setting the RC Valves can be found in the Tuning Section. PLEASE do not ask what a TPS is etc., all the information is in the Tuning Section!!
You want to check all the easy stuff first. Carb settings/clean jets, clear fuel tank breather, clean and tight electrical connections. Is the bike stock? Always easier to work with a stock bike whenever possible, to eliminate incompatible modifications.
What happens in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears? Does the bike run well and rev cleanly?
I also suggest removing the exhausts and having a look up the exhaust ports for damaged/scored pistons. For the sake of a pair of base gaskets, I would remove the cylinders and have a look more closely at the bores. No need to remove the heads at this point, which will save you about £20. _________________ Andy.

as for acceleration in the 1st three gears,
it revs all the way to the red line........
but 4th to 6th gives me no acceleration even at full throttle.........
even the slightest incline or descent alters the speed massively making me shift down a gear or two!!
as for the vj.....well........il call the mechanic for you as i pass when your
powervalve ceases.............

Which model is it.....I had an MC28 (smartcard) that had the same problem. Turned out to be a wire splice that had gone wrong. When I fitted a new loom, it ran fine.......
hi racer38,
i have an mc-16..........
do you think i could be suffering from the same problem?
because it all actually worked perfectly once.....just the once before it started misbehaving again........
thanks for your help....... _________________ nothin like a two stroke kick up the backside..
The electronics on each model varies greatly, so Tom's problem could possibly only be applicable to 1989 models onwards. There is no wire splice for the 1987 MC16 and 1988 MC18 R2J/R4J-SP models.
If the bike has run fine once, and you have modified nothing, then it is highly likely a loose/bad electrical connection somewhere. Time to go through the whole wiring harness and check/clean each fitting. _________________ Andy.
