Is this needle jet standard

Tue Jan 01, 2008 11:51 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Pulled my needle jets out to try a shim on them and found they already had one. Is this a standard shim or has it been added by someone else.

Never personally heard of a stock bike coming with shimmed needles.

that shim is way too far down the needle. Adding a shim that sits all the way up to the stopping plate (pushing the needle up what ever the height of the shim is), but that pulls the needle way to far up.

I only had it down the needle to make it easy to see, it goes all the way up.

Guess I should mention it's a 28. I don't think anyone has been in there before, all the screws where unmarked. It's got another shim in there now, test riding it soon.

Bloody hell Charles, that '28 would need to have been running no base gaskets, no head gaskets, a bit skimmed off the heads, and neat Shuttle fuel with a dash of Halfords octane booster for the needle to have been that rich! Wink

It's back to one shim now, went flat in the midrange. The needles are J8MA on the right side and J8LA on the left.

It was stock standard before I got hold of it. Now it has Tyga pipes, modded airbox lid and 2 degrees advanced flywheel.

There is a washer in the picture of what is presumably the carbs pre installation of the HRC jetkit in the HRC mc28 manual;

click for a bigger pic.

If no one has been in there you'd be very lucky if stock jetting was spot on for a modded setup, it might be OK, it might not, it might ride alright, it may not detonate into the middle of next week (or it maybe will) but it almost certainly won't be spot on.

That looks like what I've got.

148 mains in it at the moment, up from standard 140's. Might go back to 145 and do another plug chop as it seemed to feel better with them.

I put 148's in after advancing the flywheel and replacing the organic compost heap it had for a filter.
