bought an mc21 not long ago with a valid "asmbl" title from another state. my state's dmv rejected the title and directed me to the state police for an inspection of the bike. hopefully, upon passing the inspection, i could then proceed with titling. has anyone in the states had a similar experience? pitfalls i should be aware of?
Not sure what state you're in but in California if they inspect the bike it's over and that VIN is flagged as not legal for road use. From what I've been told the CHP has a list or calls a manufacturer information line and runs the VIN. It of course comes back as not legal for road use.
CHP didn't do that when I had them inspect my NSR to get it titled? They called the head office in Sacramento, but that was the extent of there calls. _________________ Charles Gallant
Was that recently? The reason I ask that is because before '99 it was easier to get these bikes registered.
It didn't happen to me personally so maybe it's just storys. I do know they wanted to do a VIN verification on my bike and I freaked out with all the storys I heard about the CHP and how they black flag the VIN. I had to do an end run around them and got it titled and registered without them seeing the bike.
They ran the VIN. Came back as not in the system, only expected that. The CHP had the bike in their possession for an hour doing the inspection, and assigning it a new ID.
Did this in 2002 I think?
A lot of information out there is put out there by people who have no clue, kind of like the emails people forward on about how you can get 1200 AAA batteries by taking apart a car battery.
Again, don't try to pull one over on your local DMV, or local police. Tell them the truth, and you would be surprised what you can do. Oh and read up on the laws in your state as well as the process for registering a vehicle with no title (you can generally find this on your states DMV website).
Oh and one other tip? Deal with the DMV people with respect. You would be surprised just how helpful they are when you are nice to them you go in there with attitude and you may find yourself with a flagged record in their systems. _________________ Charles Gallant
