Which Oil?

Tue May 06, 2008 4:36 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

OK, I'm probably gonna get slaughtered for this, why dont you do a search etc (tried oil and came up with 2200 entries, the first 300 or so didnt answer my question!)

Which two stroke oil do you use? My MC21 will mostly be used for track days and racing, and I'm currently using Silkolene Pro 2 Race but it seems to be getting hard to come by, so I'm looking for a recommendation!

Any reputable fully synthetic 2stroke should be ok. Been using BP 2T250 fully synthetic. Never had a problem yet. Nothing wrong with Motul synthetic, just a bit more expensive.

If there's a Heine Gericke near you try their own brand fully synth 2T 'racing ol'. You can buy it by the litre, but if you buy the 5 litre cans at 30 quid that makes it 6 quid a litre for fully synth. Not bad at all Wink . It looks and smells a lot like Motul 710 to me - which of course is nearer to 12 quid a litre...

I've used it plenty and would certainly recommend it in any case.

Cheers

Wb

Most of those who frequent the GT Dyno use Rock Oil, may try Wb's tip though, £6 a litre sounds good, after all, every little helps!

Judging by the smoke, the last time I was at GT I think I may have accidentally put the full 5 litres in at once, Laughing

Bel Ray synthetic for the last 5 or 6 years. Before that I used a havoline non synthetic that I was getting for free. I was told back then by a mechanic at my work that the non syn. would lubricate better. Don't ask me, that's what I was told.

Non synthetic - if that's mineral oil, it is indeed an excellent lubricant but not at extremes of temperature. At higher RPM, therefore higher temps, the oil will thin, lose boundary lubrication, metal to metal contact & engine seizure.

If its Castor oil, again very good lubricant, higher shear strength and anti-wear properties than mineral oil, but it burns dirty (resin / varnish deposits) and gums up at high temps. Used to be used a lot in 2T race engines, if loaded with anti-oxidation additives and engine stripped & cleaned regularly, smells nice - Castrol R!

Modern Fully synthetic 2T oils are all Ester types, high shear strength (good boundary lubricants), much greater viscosity stability at extremes of temp. Most of these oils from leading manufacturers (Rock Oil, Silkolene, Castrol, Motul etc etc) all use the same base stock ester oils, but their chemists will have played around with different additive packages.
