Base gasket question

Wed Jul 09, 2008 5:26 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi guys,

I'm about to put my mix 'n match engine together, I'm now running an MC16 bottom end with MC18 cylinders and heads. My question is, what is the thickness of the base gaskets? As I am going to make these myself.

Cheers
Blair

why are you going to make them? The 16 and 18 use the same base gasket. They are not what I would call expensive either. I've a couple at home I can mic for you tonight.

Cheers,

It's not a case of cost, I wanna get this engine together this weekend and I can't find anyone in NZ who has them, so I would have to get it from Aussie (like everything else). And I would have to wait, I don't do waiting.

Being an engineer means knocking a couple of gaskets up takes no time at all.
If you could mic those gaskets up, that would be awesome.

Did I mention I was putting MC21 pistons in Twisted Evil
Cheers

Stock Honda base gaskets are 0.5mm
HRC do(did) .4's and .6's as well.

It's the "crush" of the OEM gaskets that you need to consider, not the thickness.

They tend to crush a lot less than even the more expensive gasket papers.

For the sake of not wanting to wait for a pair of £3.50 gaskets, you could end up off the road for considerably longer if the pistons melt due to a combination of compression and (possibly) low octane fuel!

If you must make gaskets, I suggest you make them out of 0.6mm, just to be on the safe side. It won't cost you too much performance on a stock motor.

Only a proper Kiwi would make his own base gaskets! Remember this is the country Bert Munroe and John Britten are from. If you don't have it on the island, make it yourself.

Good luck CurcuitR!

May Bert and John be with you...
