any of you guys know what the solenoid on the oil pump does? Im trying to get to the bottom of why cylinders are full of oil. the plugs are coated in oil as with everything else. i believe its what cause my siezure/detonation in december. damn i wish a had my digi still, that way i can take some pictures of the mess.
btw
if I were to disconnect the oil pump for a bit and run premix for some shake downs.... what ratio should I run and how many sizes should I go up on the jets. In the carbs right now is 155/152 mains, 40/40 slows, and 72/70 powers. i was running 145/142 mains when the siezure occured though.
should I just blank the power jets out? It is going to be a street bike so i kinda refrained from doing that. so sick of melting pistons.
I believe the solendoid opens up the pump during start up to ensure plenty of oil is injected straight away.
Blanking the PJ's is never a bad idea as the holes in them are so small they are prone to blocking, which inevitably leads to siezure at hign speed... _________________ MC21SP Plaything

Seen it too all too often, and only heard of one going pop last Sunday with a blocked PJ!
thanks guys.
looks like im gonna be blocking the PJs. need to get to the bottom of this. How can you test the oil pump solenoid? one of the mechanics here has an idea that my oil pump is dumping way too much oil in the crankcase. when we turn the ignition on, we hear nothing from the solenoid. what do yall reckon?
I am not an expert on it, but I believe the solenoid opens the pump to full open for a specified short period of time on startup (like 5-10 seconds). An excess of oil should NOT lead to seizure, but it sure would fiddle with your plug chops and give you confusing readings.
Disconnect your oil pump solenoid and see if that does anything. If it doesnt, maybe the solenoid is internally stuck.
If you need one, I do believe I have a good one laying around in my stash here somewhere. Can you give me solid tips on registering an NSR here? Thats all I would ask in payment... _________________ Paul Herr

hoi Paul.
i have a friend that just registered his cbr400rr here in san diego. it was kinda funky though. its registered as a 1979 cb400 and he had it titled at this independent place that does titling. they looked at it and said 'wow, that very nice for 79, heres your title'. other than that, Ive noticed that alot grey markets are going through states like vermont, maine, and oregon. i guess it doesnt take much to get it registerd in those states.
ill ask around.
as for the oil pump, i have to give you something for it? can you think of anything?
BTW what would be a good starting point for main jets after blocking the powerjets? I threw a 172/170 combo to start off with.
John,
I think I'll try a DMV in Oregon. The nearest one is only an hour away.
As for jet sizes, you should only have to go up a few sizes (like from 140 to 145 or 150). The power jets are so small, just jumping 2 main jet sizes should make up for it, provided the engine configuration is the same with no further mods.
As for the oil pump, just let me know if you need it. _________________ Paul Herr
