MC18 Noob Questions

Sun Nov 30, 2008 9:37 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Ok guys go gentle on me but there area couple of questions that i am not sure about and through looking through here i couldn't find the answers yet.

Firstly , having gained the wisdom on frame numbers and models on an earlier post i now realise i have a MC18 mk1 R2J. Question is i've seen lots of referances to different versions within this ie R4J. Are a lot of the parts for these models interchangable?
Secondly, I was missing the CDI and have mananged to find one marked as PGM. I also have an oppertunity to purchase another one but this is PGM2, they are supposed to be both for a MC18 so i am a little confused. Is PGM just Honda speak for CDI and will both fit?

Probably a simple question but i am fairly new to NSR's and dont want to buy the wrong stuff.

You will need to check your wiring harness to determine which model CDI you will need. Going from my feeble memory, so may be wrong!, the PGM I was good for the mk1 MC18 and the PCM II was for the later mk2 (R4J). The latter PCM II has two long plugs similar to the MC21 PGM III.

cheers,

The R2j and R4j are the same bike, there are "R (number) (letter)" codes for all the NSR250 variants, they're all on the front page of the parts manual for that model.

The R2j is the stock mk1 mc18, the R4j is the Rothmans (SP) model, the sole difference is the wheels.
Both use the seperate CDI and power valve control units.

The R5k is the stock mk2 mc18, the R6k is the silver Terra (SP) model, fancy suspension, wheels and a dry clutch are the differences.
Both use the PGMII integrated CDI/power valve control unit.

Thanks for the advice guys as always. I've checked the PGM and the PGMII and the connectors are different on each of them. The PGM has the right connectors as in two smaller plugs but the PGMII has one small and one long and doesn't fit the loom. So i guess i'll pass on the PGMII

Canuck i wouldn't say you were wrong as you were correct in saying the PGM1 would fit myMC18 Mk1 whereas the wiring loom is wrong for the PGMII

...the PCM II was for the later mk2 (R4J).

The R4J is a Mk1 SP, as Fontyyy says, not a Mk2. With the best intentions, Canuk13's answer was still incorrect and could possibly mislead someone into purchasing the wrong item if he wasn't corrected.

Ok. I was just refering to the point he made that the PGMII would not fit my bike (MC18 Mk1) because the wiring loom connectors where diffrerent. Sorry for the confusion my statement obviously caused.

No worries, I just thought it was better to remove any doubt.

Good news about it being a 2J PGM in my view 'cause it's got a single black/blue wire behind the rear light which (when disconnected) changes the power valve opening for full power and no wire splice Very Happy

Also, if your maintenance schedule is a bit lackluster and your RC Valve control circuit pops because the servo overloads, you can replace just the controller box!
