MC21 Wire Splice

Mon Jan 19, 2009 9:23 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi,

Just joined less than a week ago. Have an MC21 in great nick on the way as I write.
I was thrawling the net and everywhere for info on the NSR models, differences, good/bad points about each model and finally decided on an MC21.
Would have loved to get an MC28 SP or SE but due to budget constraints and the VERY costly and VERY messy de-restriction process I decieded on an MC21. Anyway, the MC21 is a beautiful bike and will be alot more by the time I'm finished with it.
Just a few Q's I have, if anyone could help I'd greatly appreciate it.

1) If the two wire splice de-restriction is performed, will I need to re-jet?
2) Are there any washers welded into the stock pipes of the MC21?
3) Are the top front cowlings from the MC21 and MC28 interchangable and if so will the MC21 mirrors and upper stay fit the MC28 cowling?
4) Will Tyga end cans bolt straight onto the stock pipes and if so would you need to re-jet with this mod?
I know this bolt on mod will not give you any real power increase but they might make it rasp a little more. By the way, do the stock end cans have a baffle welded into them like the RGV end cans?

Thanks and a big HELLO to everybody!!!!

Hello "baron580",

These are all answered (some very recently) on the Forum and in the Main Site, but as you are brand new, we'll go easy for the next 30 seconds! Laughing

  • Just do the O/Bu wire splice for now. It'll give you over 60hp and a "normal" ignition curve. It's all I use and my motor currently makes 66hp in road trim.
  • No washers in the MC21 pipes, and they are capable of almost 70hp. (But are bloody heavy)
  • Top cowls are fairly interchangeable. Very slight differences, but will fit without modification.
  • TYGA cans will fit, but you'll need a small round file!
Welcome to the Forum. I suggest a good read and a search of previous topics posted, else the guys, and myself will slate you for not searching readily available material!!!! Wink

Just one more Q that I nearly forgot, instead of actually cutting and pairing the wires, is it possible to buy a connector that will fit between the plug and the PGM box to cross the blue/orange wire over to the black and the same for the GPS wires?

Yes, the KISS CDI adaptor will do that, but you can't buy then new any more.

You can get them on Yahoo! Auctions Japan for about £115 now, but why when you can wire-splice the O/Bu for the cost of a bit of tape and solder, and 10 minutes of your time?

Don't use a Scotchblock! Bloody awful things, and the connections are very secure.

Not wanting to take anything away from TYGA, but if you want direct bolt on cans the ones made by Swarbrick are very good and fully rebuildable. As I recall when coupled with a wire splice they gave just over 1hp gain over the stock ones.

Maybe I'm sad, but I quite like the sound of stock cans, they are louder than you would exspect.

I had carbon Swarbricks and they were really good.

Someone stole them, along with an SP shock, while they were off the bike! Rolling Eyes

Fenton's bog stock MC21 with wire-splice and swarbrick cans.

I think we may have opened up his airbox a little for this graph too though, but not positive.

Johns might of been a fraction better if we had been able to do a little jetting. As I recall though he was rather keen to get out and have a go on it though!

I seem to recall that at the time he wasn't too keen to open up the airbox all the way too, as we didn't have any [bigger] mains [small enough] to run with a standard carb setup and those mods to hand that day!

It was a fairly fresh motor, so yeah, sure there was another horse or two in it waiting to be released going on "usual" MC21 results and fresh engines.

Maybe you're right. Don't carry many of the smaller "bigger" jets. I used to only carry 200's + at one stage Wink

Thanks everyone for all the info. I'll remember to do a search before asking all the Q's in future.
Hello bushman, the bike is a 1992 MC21 SE, red and white with a blue strip under the indicator and red wheels.
