hello all,
i've been searching the site alllll day...just looking for some definitive answer.
i'm looking at the options i have regards refurbing/replacing my MC28 rear shock. replacing with a bespoke item is an expensive do as you all know. is it worth refurbing the orginal ? if i look for a second hand bespoke shock...what other bikes shock will fit my 28 with machining/butchering ? i hear a cbr6 f3 shock will fit ? ones i look at have the preload at the wrong end making it unaccessible once fitted ?
any advice or experience would be much appreciated.
from what i can see so far it's stick with what you have or cough up for an expensive replacement that fits !?
i had the same thing mate but got a new honda rs shock 1995 -09 on have sent it to maxton for respring and all in will be £180 which for a brand new shock set to my weight is a bargain in my book.the only thing is its a piggy back shock so you cant use it with the standard battery tray but thats long gone on mine so not a problem _________________ ive seen more tarts than mr kipling
The last standard shock I had done was rebuilt by K-Tech, but they moaned about doing it, saying it's not really rebuildable! What I think they really meant was that there's no real money in it for them!
Won't be using them again! Too far up themselves!
Reports are that Maxton are far more helpful, although I don't have first hand experience personally. I seem to recall Maxton also do a shock suitable for the MC21/28. I think Racer38 has/had one. I doubt that will be cheap either though.
I think the rebuild from K-Tech was about £120. _________________ Andy.

Some people have a problem with K-Tech as they won't do something or try to sell you something unless they think it's the right thing for you, with the stock rear shock the "problem" is, rightly or wrongly K-Tech don't think the damping can cope with it and thus wont fit an uprated spring.
They'll also try and talk you away from buying a fancy shock unless you're properly quick.
Depends what you want really, in my experience, Maxton will do what you ask and take your money, K-Tech will ask what you're doing and advise on that based on their knowledge. _________________ Please do not PM me technical questions, if you can't find it on the Forum start a thread
My experience with MH racing when he overhauled and set up my forks was great and I recommend his work. Was a few years ago now mind... _________________ MC21SP Plaything

thanks for your thoughts all. i've used reactive suspension in the past for forks with brilliant results. however, when i spoke Gareth about the NSR rear shock he told me it was only good for a small boat anchor. so his recommendation was a penske replacement...££££££££ ding ding ding !!!
gareth did my rvf forks hes good but mentioned the penske but i couldnt afford that so thats why went with the rs _________________ ive seen more tarts than mr kipling
just spoken to brook suspension in bradford, west yorkshire.
they'd like to look at the shock first but believe they should be able to fully recondition it including a valve install on the remote for 100notes. uprating the spring will depend on whats on there already.
i'll go see 'em and check out the facilities...the fella works from home...

Fontyyy, how have you found your MC28 rebuilt shock to perform on the track? It'll be pushed much harder there than on the road.
I'm not sure I agree with Reactive suspension's dim view of the NSR shock. Its no more 'uncompliant' than other bikes I've had (many) and better than a lot. A rebuild and the correct spring to suit, on average, a heavier load than a Jap rider should give half decent results. For most guys on this forum riding their NSR's on the road, we'll generally reach the limits of personal ability (or the ditch) before the suspension gives up. Some of the Race Suspension shops must be forming their views based on 10/10ths track application, where every little difference in set-up counts. _________________ Rich

I have a bit of experience with this. On my MC28SP, I had Race-Tech (in the colonies) rebuild and install a gold valve kit in my stock shock. If I had access to high pressure Nitrogen, I think I could've done it myself after the experience of rebuilding many front forks. Shock was fantastic! Much better than stock. But, I kept dragging hard parts (pipes and rear-sets) since I couldn't raise the rear end.
Next I bought a used but recently rebuilt Fox shock designed for CBR600 F2/F3. I modified it to fit the MC28 chassis. If you have access to a bench grinder and drill press, you could do it yourself. I think I was running it with about 15mm extra on the ride height which also allowed me to raise the front end a touch. The bike turns in much better and it's really nimble but I might have to give the rebuilt Showa unit the nod regarding feedback. But, there's no massive noticeable difference between them.
If you fight in the welterweight/middleweight division, say less than 160lbs (how many stone???!!!) or this is a street based bike, I'd say go with a revalve and rebuild. If you can't pass up a chip shop to save your life or this is a race bike, chase down a F2/F3 aftermarket unit that is ride height adjustable.
thanks for the input Scott !
I have now passed my shock on to brook suspension. i've told him a few nsr-world members will be interested in what he can for me/us.
nice fella. younger than i expected. knew what he was talking about. he's going to evaluate what he can do for me and give me a price. we talked on the lines of a total strip and rebuild, revalve and respring for fast road/track days, plating refreshed on the body, new braided hose to the reservoir and valve installed on reservoir.
