I'm trying to go from an M-max derestrictor to an HRC one. Having trouble, maybe somebody can help....
I removed the M-max, disconnected the nasty wire-splice-thingy (damn! What are those things called?) from the orange and blue cable coming out of the connector that goes into the PGM, here:
And pulled the M-max plugs out of these sockets here. In the picture I have reconnected the bullet-connector, one of which the M-max was using:
So If I plug everything back in, it seems OK, and the bullet connector must be the sidestand switch. Back to stock, except that orange/blue wire in the first picture which looks like it was chopped when the M-max was installed ... can't find the other end of it though. What is that wire? And does it matter?
Anyway, now I plug the new HRC derestrictor into the PGM, here:
So far so good, but the plugs on the other end .... here:
Don't look like they'll plug into anything much. They don't even come close to fitting the connectors in the second pic. and even if they did, I'm not sure it would reach. Drat!!
So have I got the wrong bike, or the wrong derestrictor? Can I bypass the problem by soldering wires together or something. Any ideas, I'm stuck? _________________ MC28 SE -sold-

You have to chop the black PGM connector (pic. 1) off the harness and also cut the 2 grey connectors of the HRC box (pic. 4).
"Hard wire" the HRC box into the stock wiring harness by soldering the corresponding coloured wires to eachother. Make sure the joins are good soldered joints. You could use bullet connectors but you want as little resistance as possible, so soldered is better.
The 2 grey connectors in pic. 2 are for the G.P.S. _________________ Andy.

The HRC Box was designed to be used with the HRC race loom. That is why the connectors don't match the standard loom.
Do what Andy said, and it should be all good. The other option that is a little less intrusive is to follow the instructionsin the tuning section, and only chop two wires at the PGM, and four coming off the GPS.
I'm definitely going to go for the full cut and solder option. Years of working with old cars has taught me that a good solder joint is the ONLY way to go.
Thanks everyone!! _________________ MC28 SE -sold-

I wanted to have the ability to go from the HRC box and back to stock at any time (why, I don't know). I found that some early 90's Honda Civics had the same gray plugs. Snipped a few and spent several hours changing wires and pins around. Put he corresponding plugs on the stock harness. My HRC box can now be unplugged and the stock harness plugged back in in just a few minutes.
Don't know what electronic wonders that HRC built into their box, but if my voltmeter is anything to go by then there's no difference between the HRC box and the Mmax box.....or the POSH box or the simple wire splice.
Is anyone daring enough to get in there and remove all the potting to take a look?
and its much neater than the boxes (i had a m-max but got rid) you have to look pretty close at my loom to see its been modified. _________________ MC21SP - Roth-tax

I read somewhere that the wire splice just tricks it into thinking it never gets out of third gear, effectively remapping 4,5,6 to 3rd. The M-Max box does the same thing, or something very similar I think. I've heard that the HRC and KISS boxes remap every gear differently, e.g. advancing the timing slightly.
Not sure where I read all this, but it's just off the top of my head, so don't shoot me if I'm wrong.

I bought expansion chambers from Ethos, and at the same time asked about "black boxes". I was advised by Hiroshi Kondo at Ethos to "use a KISS delimiter - it performs same the HRC box but much cheaper!". He steered me clear of the M-Max even though it was better known (at the time - 8 years ago!) and a similar price.
I figured this guy knew his stuff, and bought the KISS delimiter. Now whether it works better than an M-Max, or the same as an HRC box, remains to be seen, but it does work. What we do know now though, and wasn't widely known back in the "old days" is that a simple wire-splice could produce very similar (if not the same) results to all the add-on boxes!
There are two of schools of thought on this subject...
1) Some people don't like to modify the harness. If that's the case, get a KISS delimiter because it's plug & play. The stock harness plugs into it, and it in turn plugs directly into the PGM. With the wire-splice, the M-Max, and the HRC box (on a stock harness) there is a degree of modification required.
2) HRC is HRC! I for one like those 3 little letters, and know there are others on here that do too! _________________ Andy.

Mmmm - HRC bits, HRC stands for Holy Red Calligraphy or something like that Ok, I'm sorry, I know that was p@*s poor! _________________ NSR300R - Why did i ever have a 250...
I remember a thread on our original forum once, started by our very own Luke Fabian no less; "What does the RC in RC Valve stand for?". The thread turned into "What does PGM stand for?", and finally into "What does NSR stand for?".
I seem to recall some rather amusing definitions! _________________ Andy.
