hi looking to buy a mint mc18 rj2 what do i need to look for and how much should i pay are jap imports restricted and how do i fix that or should i buy a tzr250 3ma help thanks nez
I've not seen an r2j mc18 sold for over £1000 for many a long year, but that may be about to change as there is a minter on Ebay right now up to £1850 reserve not met.
In my opinion that's a heck of a lot of money, maybe too much, you could have bought Watfordhorn's mc21sp for that, Richie Welsh's lovely '21se didn't go for much more and this (cw jollymoto pipes, sorted suspension and a fresh top end) was up for £1500 a while back.
Destricting the r2j is easy, just unplug a wire under the seat unit. That's it, 60bhp!
Should you buy a 3ma instead? Only you know that. Would I rather have a 3ma roadbike than a r2j? Yes, I would.
I keep watching them on Ebay and considering them myself, that parallel twin has got such a lovely sound to it. _________________ Please do not PM me technical questions, if you can't find it on the Forum start a thread
The 3MA is basically restricted by the pipes, and to a lesser degree the airbox intakes. With decent pipes and alot of careful setting up (when derestricted the 3MA needs big carburation changes unlike the MC18) you'll get around 57-60hp (ish), maybe a bit more if you know what you're doing.
Because of the sensitive nature of the carburation (even straight from the factory) they gained a reputation of being unreliable (not to mention they can also eat ring pegs unless you change the pistons every 7000 miles or so), and if you don't feel confidant in jetting a two stroke, you have to be aware it will destroy itself pretty quickly if you get it wrong. Whilst the 3MA is in fact my favourite race rep 250, I'm not sure I'd recommend one to everyone.
Oh, and they need a bit of work to make them handle nicely aswell...
In other words, the MC18 is the easier option if you want full power and decent handling without doing alot of work.
mc18 for me everytime as my experience with one of them was good but my experience with a mates t3ma was to be fair a nightmare, but it did sound well with the expansion chambers on where as the 2ma never missed a beat and that had some real hammer, poor old girl _________________ ive seen more tarts than mr kipling
Someone thinks a 2J's worth £2500, but from the photos it was spotless
I'd be interested in seeing the bike and comparing it to mine and whether it needs a topend, 'cause it's done about 8k miles
