hi all,i have just braught an mc16 bottomend [no barrels] and want to fit it to my mc18,1988, is there any difference,,,, i have found a few paces in uk that have early spares,,, _________________ NSR250 MC18
The motor from a MC16 can not be fitted in a '18 as stock.
The rear of the cases are very different.
I'm sure with some mechine work though the cases could be mod'ed to fit but its far from a direct swap. _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...
oh , thanks stephen,i thorght it was all to good to be true,he says its from a 16,but im not sure if it is,i think hes going from the engine number,[i hope] .i will find out i suppose when its delivered tuesday, are the cranks the same if it is a 16 engine,as the 18,as that is what i am really after,,i do have a set of 18 crank cases,so if so could be changed over,.... _________________ NSR250 MC18
MC16 cranks are almost the same as '88 MC18's but have a much shorter spline and gear. They are however very different to the '89 MC18 crank. _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...
thanks again stephen, fontyyy was right you really do know your nsr/rses,these bikes are a nightmere, the parts are hard to find and when you do find them, chances are they wont fit ,could you swap compleat 16 internals into a set of 88 mc18 cases ,there are so many people/companys out there who will tell you that 16/18/rs parts are all the same, people be warned,,,,,thank god for nsr world, _________________ NSR250 MC18
great, thank you very much, stephen,we have a match, you wouldnt belive the interest my 18 got at the local mcdonolds [local bike meeting place] there are always new blades/gsxr etc and every time ive pulled in,you get bombarded by questions,we should all carry hand out leaflets, _________________ NSR250 MC18
hi all, well stephen was right,[not that i ever doughted him], the cases are different at the back,so i am going to attempt to build a good motor out of the spares i have,ie,fit mc16 crank, primary gear/clutch basket into a mc18 cases,,,,,,is there any more nasties i should know about chaps _________________ NSR250 MC18
I put a MC16 bottom end into my '89 MC18. Requires 8mm taken off the rear engine mount with a grinder/hacksaw:
To fit the MC16 engine you will need to grind about 8mm off the clutch side of the rear engine mount and grind the torque arm off flush. (Easier to grind torque arm off than make a spacer for swingarm to remove it) Engine/frame work perfectly well 'semi' solid mount.
Personally, I used a hacksaw and file on the cases, and left the torque arm dangling in the breeze...
Double check the side to make sure it is the clutch side. I do recall having to make an 8mm spacer after I cut the wrong side of the cases , but I can't remember if I corrected the info on my computer _________________ The Chopster
hi there thanks for your reply, what do you call the tourqe arm, they do look very alike, but unfortuanatly the mc16 engine i have been sent has only one thrust washer on bottom bigend ,so will be returning it,but i do know a guy who has some other engines,so am interested in your conversion, what did you do about speedo, and clutch cable.did your mc18 heads go onto 16 bottomend _________________ NSR250 MC18
Please don't confuse the terminology of heads and barrels when discussing 2-strokes, and NSR's in particular.
Heads are heads, and barrels are barrels. Not all heads are interchangeable, but ALL NSR barrels will fit ANY NSR cases. _________________ Andy.
