Washer under oil pump drive?

Thu Sep 03, 2009 3:02 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

With a search today I stumbed across something that had me worried. The engine on my race bike had the top ends and oil pump off when I got it. I flushed out the crankcase and put the top end on, only to read in one of Andy's posts that there should be a washer under the oil pump shaft. I have no idea if it was in there originally and if so, if it managed to stay there from all the tilting we did when flushing it out.

The engine ran fine yesterday during some testing (on premix) but I don't want to mess it up. So today I pulled the pump and am having trouble seeing down there to tell if there's a washer or not. Using a screwdriver I couldn't get the washer, if it was at the bottom, to move. Is it going to be obvious if it's down there? What am I going to see either way? I'm hoping that there will be a telltale sign one way or another because I just can't see good enough to know if I'm looking at a machined surface on the crankcase or the washer.

Thanks!!!
Craig

Yes there should be a washer. If no washer the spinning oil pump drive will slowly (but surely) eat your cases.

Stick a magnet down there!

The washer is quite a bit smaller than the hole so it should be easy to find/see.

I love you Stephen.

You know, sometimes it's obvious when someone is stressed out and thinking so hard they can't find the simple solution.

Ok washer isn't there and I can't find any reference to it in the manual (both online and in the one I bought from NSR world). So..... can somebody please give me the specs on it? Is it a normal flat washer? What thickness and inside/outside diameter?

Thanks!!!!!
